Has Ireland Soured on Immigration?

In the international media, Ireland has a reputation as one of the most immigrant-friendly countries out there, accepting more refugees and asylum seekers than most European countries. But, in the past few months, that has apparently changed with a series of anti-migrant attacks and riots across Ireland. In this video, we take a look at what's happened recently, why the attitudes to immigration have changed, and how this might affect Irish politics.

Our mission is to explain news and politics in an impartial, efficient, and accessible way, balancing import and interest while fostering independent thought.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that's not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. No shady corporations, no one telling us what to say. We can't wait to grow further and help more people get informed. Help support us by subscribing, engaging and sharing. Thanks!

3% of the population has arrived in the last year. No matter who those people are that is too much change in such a short period of time

I can’t believe they’re putting 17.000 of these chancers up in hotels, while they have about that many of their own homeless people freezing in the streets

Im really sick of the term "asylum seeker" being thrown around. These are economic migrants.

Another thing to note that there has been cases where 70 African male asylum seekers were placed in small rural villages with populations of less that 1000. This was done over night without any consultation with the local residents. An objective argument against this is the strain been put on local services over night. A more subjective (yet still valid) concern is that the locals feel threatened because they don't know who the people are, where they are from or what their backgrounds are. Many of these men are undocumented. Many come from cultures with less that stellar records on woman's rights. It's a culture shock.

Well done TLDR- if only the Irish media was able to provide such a balanced and grown up summary of the situation

There has been a housing shortage of ridiculous severity since 2014. Almost nobody who is under 35 even thinks about getting a house. This is the biggest issue in the country but the government has been ignoring it. Makes you ask how many of them are landlords...

Question: at what point are you allowed to express concerns about immigration without being called a racist?

I came to Ireland as an international student (earned a scholarship to study a bachelors...) and I can also see that some immigrants and refugees are not exactly adapting well to the country. I see that some ukranian refugees are now "the privileged ones", having free food, free accommodation and they also became very spoiled (I have to serve some of them in the hotel I currently work at), while at the same time people from middle east are not really happy here, always complaining about everything and demanding more stuff (Of course, not all of them, but many). This is not what we should be doing, this country (Ireland) is giving us a huge opportunity to live better lives and we should be grateful for that, and not become spoiled brats demanding more free stuff without willing to give something in return. Just my two cents.

From my experience the vast majority of Irish people are weary of immigration in Ireland, not out of racism but more they’re concerned that as a society we don’t have enough resources to cater for them

Ireland is no longer a nation. Now it is an economic zone and migrant camp.

Immigrants need to also understand that the country that takes them in is not obligated to respect or follow their rules and traditions, including their religions

You didn't mention the 3 horrific and brutal crimes committed by long term unemployed immigrants in the last 2 years. The Sligo massacre of 2 gay men ( beheaded ) and another stabbed in the face, the ashling Murphy murder and 5 and 6 year old kids getting stabbed with a 36cm knife outside their school. Probably the 3 most horrific crimes ever committed in the history of the irish state

Ireland has attracted about 350, 000 immigrants in the previous 10 years, and didn’t build enough housing for them, therefore a severe housing shortage, and then hardship and discontent for the population who can’t afford to pay rent or to buy, same as Australia, governments need to limit immigration if the housing stock is not available

This is simple maths. Ireland has more people here than housing. Unfortunately, we have a government that is very seriously out of tune with how bad the housing situation is and whose proposed solutions are woefully inadequate. That’s why the supply of new housing is increasing at a snails pace. The other option to bring this back into balance is to reduce the number of people in the country. The government needs to adopt emergency status and only allow new people into the country that can positively help with more housing. All other new entrants should be banned – at least for the next 5-10 years until the problem gets better. Yes, it is that bad. Right now, roughly 60% of Irish youth, 18-30 are considering emigrating. Number one reason is housing in a economy that is doing great. Mind-blowing.

Countries should hold referendums on this matter to get the genuine popular opinion then at least government can make informed decisions.

Its almost as if taking in a large amount of immigrants irrelevant of culture in a short amount of time and without a proper housing plan will result in mass unrest. Who would have thought

The Irish government, like every other EUropean government, should be prioritising their own people first and meeting their needs when it comes to housing and poverty....etc. Only then can you even consider taking in refugees. From what I understand, Ireland already has a seriously problem with a housing shortage pushing rents sky high. We have the same problem now in the Czech Republic.

Good for Ireland. Same her in England, sick to death of nobody consulted or asked the general public how they feel about immigration? We just get them dumped in our Towns and Cities, we have to pay for them, and everyday services are effected to an unacceptable level
