ABOUT ME

Hey there, I’m Jenna! A Canadian who has been living in Germany since 2014. 🇩🇪

Like many, I had a difficult time relocating - all the paperwork, making sure I wasn’t getting scammed, finding a flat, a phone plan, a job, etc. So, I took it slowly, documented all my learnings along the way, and partnered up with expats in every field so that I could help others avoid making the same mistakes I did. Let’s look at it as… PAVING THE WAY FOR NEW EXPATS TO SAVE TIME & MONEY!

... and now I’m bringing it all to YOUTUBE! ♥️

Knocking on your head is meant as a self-ironic way of knocking on wood: "Holzkopf" is a word for idiot.

Knocking on your head is an ironic gesture. In Germany traditionally we also knock on wood (3 times).

The "..., ne?" is a regional thing. In Berlin it is "..., wa?" (short for "Was?"); in some regions of South-West Germany (Karlsruhe etc, ) it is "..., gell?", etc.

Hi Jenny, you are a good observer of daily and typical habits. The best thing is your facial expression in your remove the pepper scene, "no". Very funny.

Maybe it’s different in Düsseldorf but where I live in a small town near Hannover and in restaurants in Hannover itself I never have a problem changing things on a meal and always get a positive response.

In regards of "knocking on wood", its also used in Germany if you approach or leave a group of people in a crowded area or table where you probably don't know each of them besides a friend or host. In that case after greeting the host or saying goodbye, you knock on the table 3x waving afterwards and shouting "hello everyone" or "goodbye everyone"...

And a general note about your clips Jenna. I really love how you start them with the "Video begins" section, so one become familiar what its all about and becoming curious. Highly appreciated, love it! Just saying.

I‘m allergic to onions. So I ask to have my meal without and explain why. Never got an unfriendly reaction. But sometimes the line of communication doesn’t work between service and kitchen. So back it goes and they either have to redo it or pick out the onions.

Listening to somebody with a sort of outside view on Germany (which is cool) it seems to me that Germany is a lot about efficiency, which might has to do with the fact that Germany still is a manufacturing country while beeing a high income country at the same time. How do you compete with cheap labour in emerging countries? With education, training, quality and efficiency. And that might be reflected in the German culture here and there. And if you are efficient at work you have more spare time.

The knocking on the head must be a regional thing..I live in Southern Germany and I've never seen anyone do that. I've also never had any problems with changing my orders... nor have I ever witnessed a waiter/waitress saying no to anyone elses changes. weird....

My favourite German “what’s up”:
“Na, wie geht’s?”
Or rather shortened either to
“Na, wie?”
Or simply
“Na?”

I believe the Canadian Eh! replaces the British question Tag like „isn’t it“. „The weather is nice, isn’t it.“ In German there are many equivalents like you „ne“ or in southern Germany it is „gell“ or „ge“.

I think you are wrong about alternating the menue. People do this all the time... And i never experienced a negative answer.

Not being pleased about the question of changing the meal seems to me to be a Düsseldorf issue. Or it depends on the restaurant. I have hardly experienced the refusal in Germany so far.

The phrase knock on wood is in both countries the same. But the German style came from sarcasm "I have a wooden head“. So it isn’t necessary to search for wood…your head is made of wood
