If I wear my hair in it’s “true natural state” I’d look like Lord Danbury 😢

We’ve had this conversation a million times. BP aren’t the ones that need to accept it. We already get harassed for the color of our skin and when we do wear our hair fit “their” beauty standard. We are BEGGING to be harassed and profiled if we wear our hair in its untouched, natural state. So talking, and actually wearing our natural hair has not been effective in this cruel world.

I think I understand what you’re trying to say, but i think you’re saying having product of any kind in your hair makes it no longer natural, but it does. Products are there to protect the hair and protect that don’t have kinky or coily hair use products to protect it. Now before I get too ahead of myself, let me just say my expertise here is that I am a licensed cosmetologist and someone who is half black that wears my hair in a way that I’d consider natural. Now hair is finicky and what works for one routine that works for someone probably won’t work for another especially if they have different hair types, textures, and or curl patterns. Also everyone’s hair needs to be thoroughly moisturized. Our scalp tends to provide that to an extent with oils (something that is more noticeable in straight fine thin hair over some with thick curly corse hair) but when your hair is curly it has a harder time distributing the oils down the shaft of the hair to protect it. That is where products come in . Hair product is there to help fill the gap to keep the hair protected where your natural oils can’t. The more fragile and curly your hair is, odds are the more product your hair is going to need to protect it from damage. With that said hair products don’t make your style “unnatural” it protects your hair so it doesn’t break from environmental abuse like sun, pollution, and humidity. Hope that helps you understand the need for product even in natural hair

Honestly it's not even about taming my hair. I just love wearing my hair in different ways.

Why is nobody talking about that?

Nope🙅She says "in its natural state", but what she describes is "untended"., 🤔

African traditions include plaiting, braid outs, stretching, conditioning, oiling and even ceramic heat stretching. And this is not about social acceptability 🙅

Shes advicating for being less groomed, not for "natural state" 🙄

Exactly this. It wouldn't be so hard if we weren't trying to make our hair something that it's not

Wearing my natural hair has never ever ever been more draining than wearing a straight or wavy wig/sew in on top of my Afro edges…with every step I took I feared the wig shifting or sliding and my unblended fro showing through… Looking like my hair grows from my scalp because it does (and quite healthy and long I might add) 🙄 is about as draining as being hydrated with artisan glacial water. Get my gist??

Any type of hair texture requires upkeep. Even straight haired girls run a brush, blow dryer and flat iron through their hair. Wash and go’s are an option. And even wearing an Afro starts with a chunky braid out then pick out. Hair requires Maintenance

It is socially acceptable to comb your hair. ALL races dress their hair. Why should we be different? This is a bogus conversation.

Most people in general don't wear their hair in their "natural" state then. If i wore my hair, natural I'd have thin hair with no body pressed to my face. Damn right im blowing that shit out, curlers in and backcombing.

Tbh it isn’t that hard it’s just hard when y’all try to make it do things it’s it’s NOT SUPPOSED TO DO. Like slick down styles laid edges and all that. Out hair is SUPPOSED to puff up and when y’all try to make it change that’s when it becomes difficult !!

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t style their hair. At least not if you want to look put together. Has nothing to do with race.

I wear my hair as is no matter who accepts it. Yes, I’m going to wash it because if I don’t it would be a nightmare and won’t grow, and yes I’m going to moisturize for the same reason and however my hair behaves when I add that moisture (in my opinion, don’t come for me) doesn’t mean I’m not natural because I added product.

But if I skip a wash day or I don’t refresh it I’m still not going to cover it up. I’m going to either continue to rock my very old wash n go as is or pull it back in a bun or ponytail and go. It’s not overwhelming to me because I do what I want. Going natural taught me to not care about acceptance or appearance from anyone. 99.9% of the time I’m taking care of my hair because I love it and anything else would just be too tedious. If ima take care of some extensions I may as well have more fun taking care of my own.

You make some really good points but I'd just like to point out that "natural" African hair was traditionally styled once in a while and worn in that style over a long period of time. Look at the women of Chad who've popularised Chebe powder, Ethiopian braided styles, West African Fulani braids etc. Maasai women are straight up bald but their men have these thin braids that are again worn over a long period.

The constant styling is what is tiring but it's indicative of the times - globalisation and fast fashion. Oh and back then hair was a social thing done by other women in the community that allowed us to bond so nowhere near the hassle we go through having to pay these stylists, braiders or struggling by ourselves for HOURS.

I don't know when this idea of unkempt = "natural" took root. It's odd and no one would be wrong in not appreciating it.

She really thought she ate. Naturals don’t wear their hair in its “truly natural state” because it would matte together and be extremely difficult to detangle and air dry. Twists and braid (outs) are the easiest and most practical styles for having healthy natural hair.

Why would we wash our hair and just leave it? That’s a recipe for disaster. There’s a reason why we do braid outs, braids, twists and the like. It’s to protect our hair from tangles and to retain length. Our hair is different so we treat it differently. It isn’t the elephant in the room, imo.

All hair is often never in its natural state weather it’s men using gel or women braiding or blow drying it to be smooth. I’m white with frizzy loose curly hair and it looks terrible completely air dried with nothing in it. I look one of those dessert island lost at sea pll😂. Straighting your hair shouldn’t mean you want to be white that’s the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of. It just mean you want a different look and it’s your prerogative to do that. There is nothing wrong with a fro, braids or straightened hair. But yeah even a fro still needs combing and shaping to look presentable like all hair styles do.
