I think my theory is that Al kept trying to bring Sam back. He was obsessed with it. That's why the project got scrubbed. Al was too emotionally involved, which is why his daughter was as well. Al never really gave up so his daughter continued his work, that's why she has the Astro bunker in her basement. After Al died, his daughter kept hounding the government to bring Sam back. She eventually made an appeal to Magic who pulled some strings and got the project restarted with the team we see, but couldn't get the daughter. Ben, either knew Al's daughter from the past (I could imagine them being in school together) or she saw him going to work one day and gave him her research that started the project to find Sam that he eventually finished. After looking at her work, he did, just as she said, go pounding on her door because he found a solution to what she gave him. This was some sort of technobabble algorithm that would let him leap into the same scene as Sam was leaping in (since Sam is leaping). But the timing had to be perfect so that he would get there. Again technobabble, but the gist is while Sam had the theory that you can leap into any point in your own history (or I would assume future since it's your own lifetime, he could have lept forward I think, even though he didn't), Al's daughter/Ben believe that there's an algorithm that determines where the leap will be. So, timing is everything, he can't just leap in a year to get to Sam, he had to go at a specific time.

Eventually, we'll get Sam and Ben in the same leap. I know SB has said he has no part in this show, but I don't believe him. I see him guest-starring either during November sweeps or in the season finale. Ben is going to find him in time. Maybe it will be a leap that he did in the original. Maybe it's a different one. But the point is, Ben is going to tell him that he's there to bring Sam home. Sam basically says, "Thanks but no thanks." In the finale of the original, Sam was told he could stop leaping anytime he wants to. He controls his leaps. So, if Sam is out there leaping, then it's because he wants to be. There may be some heavy-handed lesson for Ben about the greater good and that is why Sam is still going. They could introduce some elements that would have been part of season 6 if season 6 happened. Remember, he was told that things were going to get harder. I think when Sam appeared to Beth at the end of the series, he was himself. I'm not sure i'd be into all those changes, but, I'm interested enough in what's happening that I will ride that ride for a little while if necessary.

I also wonder if part of the reason Ben was in a hurry to get going was because something would undo what Sam did if Ben didn't go when he did.

Yes, she's the same actress. She was in the episodes 'M.I.A' and 'Mirror, Mirror' from the original series.

As for the overall story, it's hard to tell as the original leaping turned out to be as much about God (which was implied in the final episode with the mysterious bartender as well as having the Evil Leaper in the final season) as it was the science. So is the new series going to lean in to that, or shy away from it completely?!

This episode was great! I loved the episode's ending in particular, and plus, the return of Susan Diol as Beth was awesome! Loved every part of it, better than the last episode as it has more development here!

My theory is Ben and Janice figured out that Sam has leap somewhere in time where he is stuck, which I think it my be the place that Sam originally leap from (In New Mexico 1999), I's not sure on the date. So when Ben leap into Sam. Sam returns home to the present day. Ben is at a place where the first Quantum leap experiment was at so he can use that to leap home. However it not going to be that easy as they need to control the leaps like solving a puzzle, hence the point on the axis graft on the screen. Ben and Janice believe that the Quantum leap team will not authorised this as it's to risky and why they did the leap in secret.

What if Sam leapt into Ben after the party - before Ben's leap - and contacted Beth since Al has past. Then Sam wrote the algorithm, left the message for Addison, and the map to the mysterious destination.

I think what's going on is Ben leapt in order to find Sam and bring him home. If Al promised Sam he would get him home and he couldn't do it then Al would have asked his daughter to help Ben do it. I believe that Ben and Janice found Sam's location and that's why he had to jump.

I like the Rouge quantum leap project that Janice is running. Think Raymond Lee n Ernie Hudson are being dragged down by the rest of the cast. Caitlin Bassett thank you for your service in the real military but you don't fit here.
