Dirk Powell - Waterbound

from "Time Again" (2004)

I went out on a lane one night
Moon and the stars were shining bright
A storm come up and the trees come down
I tell you boys I was water bound

Waterbound on a strangers' shore
River rising to my door
I carried my home to the field below
I'm waterbound nowhere to go

Carve my name on an old barn wall
No one would know I was there at all
The stable's dry on a winter night
You turn your head you can see the light

Black ant crawling on an old box car
A rusty door and fallen star
Ain't got a dime in my nation sack
I'm waterbound and I can't get back

It's all gone and I won't be back
You don't believe me count my tracks
The river's long and the river's wide
I'll meet you boys on the other side

So say my name and don't forget
The water still ain't got me yet
Ain't nothing but I'm bound to roam
I'm waterbound and I can't get home

I went out late one night
The moon and the stars were shining bright
A storm come up and the trees come down
I'll tell you boys I was waterbound.

Waterbound on a stranger's shore
The river rising to my door
It carried my home to the field below
I'm waterbound, nowhere to go.

I carved my name on an old barn wall
Or no one would know I was there at all
Stable's dry on a winter's night
You turn your head you could see the light.

There's a black cat crawling on an old boxcar
A rusty door and a falling star
Ain't got a dime in my nation's sack
I'm waterbound and I can't get back.

Yes, I'm goin' and I won't be back
If you don't believe me, count my tracks
The river's long and the river's wide
I'm meet you boys on the other side.

So say my name and don't forget
The water still ain't got me yet
Ain't nothin' but I'm bound to roam
I'm waterbound and I can't get home.

Dirk is one of the unappreciated geniuses of our time. Impeccable taste, a deep understanding of how to produce music to sound its best. I only wish he recored more. This song is so much better with his improved verses.

I loved this Banjosound in the songs of Derroll Adams especially in the song "The valley"

Really an everlasting song. It doesn’t get much better than this. The subtle way the rhythm picks up throughout the song is so good. I’ve listened to this song over 100x and don’t think I’ll ever tire of it 🙌🙏

First time I heard this I thought he was singing an ol' folk song from the 1800s. Turns out he wrote it himself!
