CFK: Making A Difference
A Message From Dr. Gueverra
As the world battles coronavirus, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. Instead, I encourage you to focus on how you can make a difference. In ways big and small, The College of the Florida Keys is contributing to the greater good.
Students and alumni are providing heroic services as first responders in healthcare and in law enforcement, as well as other professions. Nursing student Amy Dees is already putting her professional skills to task by overseeing respiratory care in the ICU at Lower Keys Medical Center. She is working around the clock, literally sleeping at the hospital, to ensure patients are receiving the care they need. Another nursing student Madison Nasser is organizing fellow nursing students to answer hotline calls for the county health department and to help with epidemiology. Our community will also benefit from nursing department supplies such as masks and gloves that were donated to Advanced Urgent Care and Mariners Hospital. Additionally, the College stands ready to provide space in Key West and Tavernier for the hospitals to use should the need arise.
For most of us, we can make the biggest difference by simply staying home as much as possible. Even if you are young and healthy, it’s important to know that you are helping our entire community, especially those most vulnerable, by limiting interactions with other people. Instead, use technology to socialize and stay connected.
The College of the Florida Keys is small but mighty. Let’s all do our part: stay strong, stay smart, stay home.
