University of Alabama Students Protest in front of Presidents' Hall
Показать описание
Dr. Hilary Green's students led a protest outside a University of Alabama administration building April 29, 2020. They addressed the history of slavery on UA's campus as revealed in a bench in front of the Presidents' Hall, formerly Manly Hall. The bench is made of bricks made by enslaved people. There is a plan to position the names of UA's Presidents above those bricks. Earlier, the university removed the name of UA's Presidents from buildings formerly known as Manly and Woods Hall. The new bench is an interesting counterpoint to the disappearance of those names, which are scheduled to reappear in a different format, namely marble placed above the bricks. See this video to learn more about how this issue fits into Dr. Green's larger efforts to address social conflict on UA's campus since the antebellum period.
