TOP TIP: pressing the "X" actually closes the program without minimising it to the system tray. So if you close it, nothing will show up, which is probably why some people say it's not working.

If anyone is having trouble getting the OSD to actually come up, try and bind a key to "Toggle On-Screen Display" in the afterburner Settings under the On-Screen Display tab.

Excellent video. Just to add in the On-Screen Display tab in Afterburner properties you can select a shortcut button to turn on/off the OSD.
