Between the 16th and the 19th century, the Catholic Church had a habit of exhuming the skeletons of ancient remains from the catacombs in Rome, claim that the bodies were saints and early Christian martyrs, decorate them lavishly. They were displayed for all to see in many churches in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
