'New Year's Day' by U2 (Instrumental Cover - New Version)

The audio quality of my original attempt at performing this song was pretty terrible, to say the least. While this isn't perfect by any means, I definitely think it's an improvement. Based on the Elevation Tour version.

This song is a great example of how Adam Clayton functions as more than the bassist in the U2. He is like the band’s rhythm guitarist and that allows the Edge to float above it all, playing all his unique riffs.

Edge always talks about the War album as the one where he didn’t use much echo but it’s certainly all over this song. I love his playing but you almost have to be a mathematician to play like him, which is frustrating if you suck at math like I do. 😀

Love this version Steph. I play bass myself and love this song. It’s great to see and hear your implementation of the subtle changes to Adam’s bass line. I’d love to see an in depth interview with him about how he creates his bass lines and how he has tweaked then over the years. I guess as he improved as a player he saw where he could enhance those classic lines that he laid down so many years ago and when so young. I’m a similar age to the U2 guys slightly younger but well remember them emerging on the scene. I enjoy your covers Steph and you are clearly a talented multi instrument musician. Another song that Adam’s line changed quite significantly is ‘Even Better Than The Real thing’. I don’t see too many covers of both versions. I know you did the earlier version and I’d love to see you do the updated version. All the best to you.
