Four South Korean municipalities have been recognized as international "Wetland Cities", for their commendable efforts on the conservation and wise use of urban wetlands.
This is Yongneup Swamp on the peak of the 1,280 -meter-tall Mount Daeam in South Korea's central northern county of Inje.
In summer, visitors to Yongneup can find flag iris, meadow rue and other wetland plants there.
The swamp, called a rich repository of ecosystem, has some 600 species of wild animals and plants, including biro gentian and endangered black woodpeckers.
[Choi Seong-Won, visitor]
"It's amazing to learn that the 70-centimeter-high peat stratum of this swamp has been formed over the past 4,500 years."
A total of four municipalities in the country -- Inje County, Changnyeong County, Suncheon City and Jeju City -- have been awarded the Wetland City Accreditation at the 13th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Dubai.
The accredited "Wetland Cities" are allowed to use the "Ramsar" brand in their environment-friendly agricultural products, ecological tourism, and other promotional purposes for six years.
Besides, the four municipalities will further strengthen their position as eco-friendly towns.
