Be Careful With The AUR On Manjaro Linux

The AUR being the Arch User Repository is designed for use around Arch Linux and when you use it on anything else even something Arch based you may face depending on the configuration of that distros repos.

To be honest, as a former base Arch user, I couldn't be arsed to build AUR stuff manually when a good amount of things I needed were on there and not the official Arch repos (couldn't remember what exactly). I just used yay and didn't feel bad about it.

I've been using Manjaro for almost 2 years now and it has been working just fine. I also never had problems with the AUR, although I have to say that I don't use the AUR often.

1) Install OS, when partitioning, use BTRFS for the root partition
2) Set timeshift
3) Install whatever packages you want, update whenever you feel like (the more often, the better).

This process is equally important for any rolling-release distro. In pure Arch and other arch-based distros you also can have breakages, minor or some times major.
I've been using Manjaro for a couple of years, and frankly have never any problem. I do pick packages out from the AUR and never, not even a single time, had this problem you tell about. Maybe is just luck. Even so, if that would happend, I could roll back with timeshift (it comes with Manjaro by default, in fact... ). If an update happend to break your system or some important software for your workflow (which, I insist, could also happend with pure Arch, that's the whole reason Manjaro holds the packages for testing, whether you think they do it right or not), just roll back and wait a couple of days or weeks until things are solved.

Manjaro is easy to setup, has a very big community, and you have acces to AUR, really is the best distro for any noob, way better than Ubuntu in which you can't install any software that is less than 2 years old, even if you are willing to compile it. In Manjaro you just grab whatever program you need and Pamac (when working...) or Pacman, or Yay, or whatever package-manager you wnat to use, will do the work for you 99% of the time.

I have used Manjaro KDE for years now. I'm a basic user. I do have some packages from the AUR but not many. I have never had any issues. Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know. The reason that I use Manjaro is that I don't have to go configure every little thing. Things that I have no need to on Manjaro nor do I want to. Things like Nvidia settings gui, the need to type in my user password everytime I put in a usb or have a drive not set up in fstab, wifi and Wifi hotspot from kde to other devices, connecting a Bluetooth device. Manjaro just makes that easier. Also in my personal experience Arch people are not friendly are toxic, abusive and think that they are superior to everyone else. They really turn a lot of people away from using Arch because of their bad attitude. I personally have been called a lier because I have not had any issues with Manjaro. I have had death threats for using Nvidia, Manjaro and KDE from Arch users. They are the worst people on Linux. If someone took the ease of use of Manjaro install, permissions, drivers, setup but on a pure arch I would try it. I have tried endeavour OS and Arch GUI many times. But as a basic user with basic needs and I am not technically minded. Those do not make it any easier to use. They do for those who are. But they still have the same issues. Having to understand polkit rules, which Nvidia settings package to install, which Bluetooth settings to go in and manually modify. Also endeavour OS has the most useless preinstalled packages I have ever seen. People should not recommended Endeavour OS to new users or people who are on are on Manjaro as it is not a easy simple arch replacement for Manjaro that they make it out to be. I have been told many times that Endeavour OS is Manjaro but Arch. It is not. It is a lot harder and if you are not interested or have the time and technical knowledge to deal with Arch Manjaro is a good Distro. Endeavour OS is not.

Be careful with the AUR. No matter which distro you run.
It's not exactly a walled garden of curated, safe and secure content under strict scrutiny.

It's more like a bunch of PKGBUILD scripts, written by people you don't know, to fetch external archives and execute a bunch of commands as root (or su)

I created my own Distro called XeroLinux, but I have been running Manjaro on my HTPC for a year now.. I have 2 AUR packages, Paru to get Plex-media-server... That's it.. Also the reason XeroLinux exists is because of Manjaro, that's the distro that made me fall in love with Linux and KDE Plasma.. I, myself couldn't give a flying hoot about all the controversy around it. As long as it works, for me, I will keep using it.. Oh and Pamac is great but has been outdated on AUR for quite a while now (Since Dec 2021) very odd... Will talk to devs see what's up..

i have switched over to manjaro and i love using it, the gui apps are fantastic and it speeds up the 6+ y/o computers in my house even more. i tried installing vanila arch as an intermediate linux user and pacman would not like me over there but after switching to manjaro everything just works!

Stopped distrop hoping after I landed on manjaro over a couple years ago.
I've been using command line pamac for less than a dozen specific packages, I might have once ran into a specific dependency issue where I had to install the unstable version from manjaro repos, all fixed couple weeks later.
Pretty much nothing seriously bad ever happened.

Though with that in mind I kinda get pissed by the downstreaming delay from arch to manjaro and might try either arch or endeavour if I get some time off.
Actually it just works wonders, with my job, I just don't have any spare time to build an arch from scratch or daily fixing linux shenanigans.

I used Garuda Linux and honestly I couldn't be happier. Everything just works, and it connects directly to the arch repos as well as a few additional

I've been using Manjaro for a good while now, and I absolutely love it. Still, using the AUR really can be a bit less than satisfactory, and I do acknowledge that that is not necessarily an AUR problem. There are a few "official" guides around the Manjaro forums calling for caution and explaining the need for it from the Manjaro side -very much worth reading, and focused rather on dependencies and AUR packages possibly screwing up packages Manjaro needs, and all that.
I didn't really know about that Pamac issue about pinging the AUR too much and unproductively -sorry about that, from a user.
I'd recommend Manjaro over any other distro I've tried without ever doubting, but I'd also say that AUR packages, when using Manjaro, should always be one of the last options you try. Better for both sides, I think.

Manjaro being a distro that aims to be user friendly instead of user-centric should check for dependency incompatibilities when trying to install stuff from the aur with pamac and not allow you to proceed unless you double confirm it with a "yes, do as i say" kind of thing at the very least. Not necessarily block you from breaking stuff like how pop_os! and apt do now but at least be smart enough to detect these things and warn the user

If there's something significantly wonky happening on my manjaro install, I boot into MX for a week or two, then go back and upgrade manjaro, and things are fine. I'm extremely grateful to the people who fix these problems for us. It's more than I can do.

I've been using Artix for about a year now. I've tried a lot of the arch based distros. Really like the setup I have now so I'll stay on it for the time being. Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it.

I've been using EndeavourOS on my main computer for almost two months now, before that I spent about half a year on Pop!_OS. I gotta say, I love how all the information I could ever want is found in the Arch Wiki. Gone are the days of scouring the web for Linux forum posts that apply to my question. It also helps that I made myself use the terminal to get more comfortable with it. Now I feel right at home in EndeavourOS and I am unlikely to switch to a different distro for a while. I've only needed three packages built from the AUR and all of them have worked great so far. The AUR is an awesome resource and I like how packages can potentially move up to the official Arch community repo.

I have an old Thinkpad at the moment. I have used arco Linux for a couple years with no issues. But for some reason a few months ago I couldn't use my second monitor after an update. Messed around with it for a couple weeks. I tried solus, and everything just worked as soon as it was installed. No problems with 2 monitor setup. Maybe it's because I have an old laptop. Great video again 👍

I'll say, Mister R, that I don't use Arch or its derivatives, mostly due to being more at home in the Debian & Slackware worlds. This channel is a favorite of mine because you cover a lot of topics still pertinent and you do great homework before recording.

I use Manjaro and did learn the hard way about Manjaro and the AUR. Most of it works great but in the future, I may switch to a full Arch distro.
