Amaryllis Flowering Time-Lapse | Random Video Thursday's

Показать описание
Taken over the course of 4.5 months (3 months for leaves, 1.5 months for flower). The bulb was given to me after it had been kept in a refrigerator for a many months. It was still alive and dormant, but was barely hanging on to life. Normally they will flower immediately after they are removed from the cold, but this one had no energy to produce a flower. So for the first 3 months it grew leaves to absorb energy to create a flower within the bulb. After it stopped growing leaves I watched the bulb expand in the dirt and knew it would never flower for this seasonal cycle. So I stopped watering it and let the soil become bone dry for about a month and then cut off the leaves and placed it in a paper bag. The bag was then placed in the garage which is kept at 55F degrees through winter.
After about 10 weeks I brought it back inside and soaked it well in water. In less than a week it was growing new leaves along with 2 flower pods. I did not water it at all during flower to prevent bulb rot. The flowers grow very fast and the soil hardly has much time to dry out by the time the flowers open. Standing water is stored in the hollow flower stems as they grow too. Once they are done flowering the process of cold dry storage must be repeated to simulate their natural environment so they can flower again (Rinse and repeat).
Just FYI I grew this under a Yearld grow light which will be seen in an upcoming video.
