I want a GH5 with Sony's amazing auto-focus

If the GH5 had a better autofocus it would be the perfect m43 camera. I love mine. The flip out screen, IBIS and 4K in 60fps make the GH5 the better choice for me.

Uh Idk... Well sometimes when you shoot the action scene in my case I prefer a good autofocus... And full frame... But the flip screen on GH5 it's very useful unless you take a external one... Another thing the colour challenge I think that in post production you can do a great things and nobody will notice the difference

Great comparison Connor! I think you managed to highlight exactly what I feel are the fundamental differences between the two cameras and their intended purposes. I bought an a7iii because I shoot more run and gun indie stuff, VLOGs, and generally single shooter promo videos for companies/businesses/artists. As well as that there's the photography it offers for the portraiture and events side of my business. But if I booked a gig where there was budget to hire some proper cine lenses, have a full lighting crew and a focus puller, and I had to pick between these cameras, I wouldn't even need to think about it. I'd get the GH5 or GH5s with a speedbooster to get the full range of the lenses I was shooting on, and I'd be confident that rushes would look a billion times better than they would with the a7iii. It's got 10-bit, it's got 4K 60fps, it's got 1080p 180fps, it's just all around a WAY better production camera. The a7iii is more of a personal/run and gun camera setup. That's the way I see it anyway. What do you think?

Great comparison. I'm rocking the Sony A6300 for a year now and was looking to get the A7iii, but the GH5 actually suits my run&gun style a lot better. Plus I'm going to focus on Macro Cinematography. That means that a deeper DoF and smaller sensor actually is better for that. You just can't beat the IBIS of the GH5, it's like a Doc Shooting dream

Nice review, I currently use a GH4 and was thinking to upgrade at some point and was trying to decide between Gh5 and A7 iii. This review was really helpful, thanks!!

December 2022 and I just ordered the GH5 M2. It still has plenty of advantages over the latest Sony cameras. I have the ZV-E10 and A7S ii, and I use my G9 90% of the time. I am looking forward to using the GH5 M2.

Been a GH5 user for more than a year, and have been shooting commercials and weddings with it, but the autofocus is unusable and anything beyond 1600 ISO is horrible, I use NeatVideo to eminate it and it still has too much noice, and manual focus on a gimbal for running movements and weddings where there is so much going on and having to worry about autofocus is just a letdown for me. I'd like a Canon 1dx but its too much money, the a7iii gives me the perfect balance. Most client work is delivered on 1080, so 4k 60 is barely used. If gh5 didnt have contrast based autofocus it would be an amazing camera.

I'm shooting my first wedding with my GH5 since recently switching from the a6300. I am looking forward to the low light functionality considering I have the metabones speedbooster and sigma f1.8 18-35mm. I am sure I can get some great low light results. Nice video man! I debated for a while, and I just couldn't justify the cost difference. I picked up my GH5 and metabones for $1600 used. I already had the Sigma 81-35. Even if I sold my Sigma 18-35mm and used the $1600 I had, I wouldn't have enough for an a7iii with any lens worth shooting professional gigs. I had the GH4 previously so I know what I'm able to do in most cases to get good low light results. Cost wise, the GH5 was a better choice for me.

Both great cameras but for me the bottom line is gh5 is better for video where I make my money.

metabones speed booster is an upgrade to take on 35mm lens for better bokeh and low light performance for your gh5 downside ibis will very due to what lens you have on

Thanks for sharing this with us. Let us know how the phone clip on lens work

Yeah, the GH5 will have to do. I like filming 24fps. So, I need the best stabilization for run and gun low budget productions. I can figure how to manage low lighting conditions with it. The bokeh is fine. I just use shallow depth of field to keep my viewers to focus on the subject. So, how the bokeh looks isn't essential to my content. I need an LCD screen that can flip in as many angles as I can.

Have you noticed a difference in autofocus with the 2.4 firmware? Great video and comparison. Both cameras look pretty nice

Great job man you hit on some key points with both cameras

Thanks for doing this video - great work! Agreed with your points...I've had a GH5 for about a year & just got the A7iii. Auto-focus on the Sony is killer & for stills it's a no-brainer, but cannot touch the GH5 for run n' gun or the 10-bit color space...not to mention that 4k 60p frame rate! Can't wait to test the Atomos Blade V with these cameras once it's released into the wild!

Was this with the latest GH5 firmware? The autofocus was significantly improved. You have to customize the AF settings though. Also, the Mitakon f0.95 lens give you great low light.

Thanks for your unbiased comparison. Has an actor / independent filmmaker, I'm still leaning towards the Sony a7iii... whick camera do you think my Canon lenses would work better on? I am coming from the Canon 5D II.
