I used to work at Blockbuster; it's how I got through college. Man, I miss it. We got to play movies all day (up to mild PG-13 rated), a 10% off on all purchases, 7 free rentals a week, and week early access to rentals and purchases. As for the job itself, it was fairly easy. Returning rentals to the shelves and keeping things organized, talking movies with customers, checking out rentals, then cleaning up and closing at the end of the day. That's basically it. There was the once a month all-nighters we pulled doing inventory, but that wasn't so bad.

If you truly miss the thrill of going to Blockbuster, try browsing the DVD section at your local library. That's been a great substitute over the past ten years.

What I miss most about Blockbuster, Toys R Us, etc was simply the motivation to leave the house a lot more often, and at most get the thing you needed right then. Now everything these days is instant, pre-ordered for pickup or shipped to you. This IS the future we wanted, but we didn't want to lose anything important from the past

Definitely the social experience. You can still have that with friends in a different way, but it just isn't the same as walking in and seeing someone you know, and chatting and comparing what you're going to rent. Definitely good memories.

I miss going to Blockbuster every Friday as a kid, renting up to 2 movies to watch over the weekend, and then having a movie night w/ my family w/ popcorn and pizza.

Blockbuster really was a big deal. Had about everything you needed for a night in. Cool extras. It was a place that was needed at the time and they capitalized. Amazing how far we have come in such a short amount of time. Was fun to watch. Great video

I'm from Ireland, and while we never had any Blockbusters here, XtraVision served the same purpose. I would always love going there on Friday nights, and picking out videos to watch. Pure nostalgia! 🥰

This is a nostalgic and short period in history. I loved those days. No cell phones, pagers were a big deal. Shopping malls. Get stoned, go down to Blockbuster, and giggle while deciding on what movie we would get, going home and ordering pizza. Happy times.

Blockbuster and Hollywood video. Those were fun times. Getting a movie or video game on Fridays. I'll never forget back in 2001 when I had just got the original XBOX for Christmas and then going to Blockbuster the next weekend and there was actually a copy of Halo available, when it was ALWAYS checked out. I heard the Gregorian chants before I even played the game.

My favourite memory of blockbuster (as a kid) was wandering away from my parents into the horror section. I’d spend time just studying the cover art on the video cases (and gaping at some of the thumbnails from the movie on the back of the case)… and then getting the “DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT” glare from my parents 😂😂

The problem with streaming is a paradox:

"The more available something is, the less you will want it."

#1 - Exactly. I liked being able to slowly walk up and down the aisles and carefully examine the cases while I made my choices. Sometimes you could find some very interesting classic, obscure, foreign, independent or direct-to-video releases; something you've never heard of starring people you've never seen before or since and it became a memorable movie experience.

I did know about the Blockbuster Video Game tournaments, because I competed. I won at the store but got knocked out in the semi-regional.

Blockbuster has a special place in my heart. Its where I rented the film Anne of Green Gables produced by Sullivan Entertainment. It was the beginning of my fandom with Anne of Green Gables. I also loved the movie theater atmosphere of the place. The smell of the popcorn in the store was great.

The family bonding, browsing and community aspect is what I miss about Blockbuster. I used to go there every Friday to rent a movie or game. The 90s and early 2000s were great.

Man that brings back memories of getting games as a kid and buying nestle crunch bars!

For me, going to Blockbuster with my family or friends was an event that we looked forward to every week. That made it special for me. Plus, the cover art on some of those movies. I'll never forget, as a kid, seeing the covers of Hellraiser and Night of the Demons. Now, after renting them, I'm a life long horror fan.
