Maybe its easy for me because im 6ft4 and 275lbs playing rugby, but i grab it at the footrest mounting and pull it up.

My favourite is leaving the bike in gear and trying to lift it on the stand, with a Goldwing it is for all intents and purposes impossible

Whenever you take the bike off the center stand you should ALWAYS stand on the side opposite of the kickstand. Why? Well first off you alredy mentioned that if the bike tips away from you, the side stand can catch it. 2nd, you have better front brake controll wich is really important as you cant have the bike in gear and you cant operate the rear brake. Now in general, if you take any classes on handeling bikes (so thats off the bike and slow manuvers) any coach worth their salt will tell you that the correct way to mount, dismount and handle the bike on foot is from the right side of the motorcycle, or to be more precise, on the side opposite of the kickstand.
