How to SAFELY use multiple power supplies for crypto mining (4 ways!) 24-pin PSU splitters, Add2PSU

In this video I go over the 4 different ways of how to use multiple power supplies in one mining rig. Using 2 or more power supplies in the same crypto mining rig can be a great way to save money, as it is usually cheaper to buy two lower powered PSUs than one high powered PSU. For example 2x 850W PSUs will usually cost less than 1x 1600W power supply. And with the techniques I show you in this video, you will be able to plug 2 or more power supplies into your PC or mining rig safely. In the video I go over the techniques from worst to best. The most basic and "worst" way is just using a paperclip or exposed wire to trigger the 24-pin circuit on your secondary power supply. The second technique is very similar just using a cap for the 24-pin instead. The third technique is very common, using a 24-pin atx psu splitter cable that lets you plug 2 PSUs into the same motherboard. The fourth and recommended way is using what is called an Add2PSU-chip. These clever little Add2PSU chips lets you daisy chain multiple power supplies together safely and works by letting your primary PSU trigger your secondary ones to start instantly. Finally, I also go trough how to safely plug your components in when using multiple power supplies in your mining rig.

This is an excellent guide for using multiple PSUs. Many thanks for creating it. If you're taking requests, I'd say another great beginner's guide would be cooling. Like how to use the fans (back or front), which way to blow air, how to use external fans as you have in your setup etc.. Thank again for the great content.

Good vid, the only thing Id like to remind people is that there is actually small current running the paperclip, and that you can just cut it shorter and cover it with electric tape. The tester cap is probably more safe.

Im surprised this hasn’t been asked yet, so ill go ahead: Some PSU cables are 16 AWG like corsair.. and the 24 pin splitters on the market are all 18 awg.. is it safe to use 18 awg splitter if ur psu 24 pin is 16 awg?

Good job. Thanks for the video. GPU and Riser on the same power unit. OK, but what if you have a PSU with 2 or 3 12v rails on it. Do you need to power gpu and riser on the same 12v rail or you can use one 12v rail for only the risers and another for only the gpus ?

Hi Seb, thanks for the great vid and I have a questions.

I have a 10x 3070 rig currently powered by 2x 850w PSU. Main PSU connected to MB + CPU + 5 x 3070, the other PSU connected to the rest 5 x 3070.

My questions are

1. Is the main PSU solely powering MB and CPU so it handles more power load than the 2nd PSU? Or are two PSU evenly splitting all powers load of all components (MB+CPU+ 10x 3070)?

2. I am thinking of replacing the main PSU with a 1000w PSU, is it okay to have 2 different watts PSU powering the same rig? Thank you so much for helping!

Very good information, you answered some basic questions that bothered me. I'm an electronic technician but don't know anything about mining. A couple of suggestions: If you make videos like this in the future, you keep referencing your first choice as a "chip"; however, that is a BOARD and not a chip. A chip implies an integrated circuit and the word chip comes from the actual silicon wafer ie, "chip" that is found on all IC's. So I would use the word circuit board and more correctly you should say relay board because that orange component on the board is a relay that once it is powered on or energized by the main power supply it closes the contacts in the relay that then signals the next power supply to power up. Also when you explain the need for keeping the power supplies separated at around the 13 and 14 minute mark, you mentioned that if one power supply fails and that certainly is a valid concern, but from an electronics perspective, there is always the possibility and I would say the likelihood that no two power supplies will generate the exact same voltage even though the label on the power supply says that it does. You may also notice a plus-minus percentage as well telling you that the voltage will likely not be exact. So the most important reason why we want to keep power supplies apart is so that they don't get into a situation where one voltage is higher than the other supplying the same graphics card. That is a real world and very frequently occurring design issue. Your stipulation to never mix power supplies is well-founded and I wholeheartedly support that. Thanks again! Hi ! I think i know a fifth way to use multiples power supply with a better safety . I've got 2 Asus B250 Mining expert and you can plug 3 PSU on the motherboard . I think is the most safe way to do it . But they are really hard to finds this days ^^' .

I have 220W PSU on my old computer, and I have another 850 W. can I use the old 220W only work on the mobo, CPU and harddrive but not the GPU. I only use 850W PSU for GPUs, does that work? Of course I need a Add2PSU chip.

Yeah i did the same on purpose, in case one psu fail, its could running immediately with 50% capability of my rig while im buying another new one. But im always keep spare for psu & mobo in hand.
