Dr. Pamela Tas is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a member of the IPREFER research project team. Dr. Tas presents how to create biodiesel and green aviation fuel using the plant known as pennycress. Dr.Tas also discusses how to produce biodiesel and the benefits to the environment from using biomass to create transportation fuels. This video is the first in a three-part series. The material is intended for advanced high school and college students interested in ag-based biofuels. The IPREFER research project has a goal of commercially launching pennycress as a cash cover crop in 2021.

This was a great introduction to biodiesel. I am curious about the fatty acid profile for the pennycress plants. I am conducting research in NC on making ethyl esters with a glyceroxide catalyst. We use the cooking oil from the fryers in the cafeterias on campus to make fuel for the diesel mowers and generators. At smaller scales, we have used soybean oil and distilled the product to obtain two different fractions that have different melting points.
