We are experiencing a dangerous decline in nature: One million species are threatened with extinction, soils are turning infertile and water sources are drying up.

But there are glimmers of hope: The Ganga river basin is not only home to twenty-five thousand animal and plant species, such as the Ganga River Dolphin, it also forms the spiritual and economic lifeline for almost half of India’s population. With increased pollution, the country’s greatest natural asset is at risk. Watch how farmers, wildlife advocates and government experts are teaming up to bring a river back to life.
Namami Gange has been recognized as a World Restoration Flagship under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

These initiatives represent Earth’s frontiers of hope, as countries agreed to a new Global Biodiversity Framework. Under the agreement, countries promise to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and seas, and bringing back 20% from degradation.

Germanys rivers were also heavily polluted due to the Industrial revolution, chemical industry and waste water. Nowadays they are clean, I believe the same can be achieved in India an I know you will achieve it, I know many bright Indians, future is bright for India.

Illegal sand mining and dropping construction wastes in the Ganga river bed near dolphin sanctuary in Bihar major threat for the existence of this endangered species.

The GANGA river has definitely gotten cleaner. I grew up near it and I remember that many parts of the river just was filled with trash. But seeing massive improvements these days.

So good to see Ganga getting this love and attention.
Many years ago, I washed in the Beas River. I had to walk a kilometre before I could find a spot where I would not get swept away. I have always been a part of your land since then.

Ganga is not only 1 of the 3 holy rivers but also supports a lot of people and animals by providing fresh water source and we already lost 2 of the holy rivers, we must protect Ganga bcs it's our responsibility.

Many people consider ganga as their mother and I can absolutely understand them, when there is no one to support you or you are depressed just take a dive in rishikesh. its so rejuvenating and all the stress is gone. Even though my religion doesn't consider it as monther but i personally consider ot as mother and hopefully like rishikesh one day clean water will also flow in Varanasi and kolkata.

THanks to Modiji for sticking to his promise. The Ganga is at the heart of Hindu religion. Somewhere down the line during Mughal and Colonial era, the Hindus fell into wrong teachings that dumping anything into Ganga will make it holy.
But since 2014, we are proud of the people around Ganga and the Govt for continuously cleaning up the soul of India.

Thanks for covering this.

Inspiring iniative, really needed, I'm from north east Arunachal Pradesh visited agra once and got really disappointed that the famous river which we heard about since birth was not as thought of. Hope through this initiative will get to see a glimpse of the historical Ganga in its natural form

The NEP absolutely has to embed Japan's learning construct: kids cleaning their school classrooms, premises and bathrooms as well. Fresh water is life

It is Ganga river, not ganges. Stop changing the name for your sake. Respect name and culture.

I live near Diamond Harbour, a city towards the mouth of Ganga into Bay of Bengal. Each monsoon, we see so many dolphins gather up and hunt migratory "Ilish"(species of herring), that come all the way from ocean to spawn. The water here is brackish, and very polluted. The place is not far from one of the biggest ports in India, Haldia. Although the number of dolphin coming each year has been decreasing. I hope somebody documents this phenomena through a documentary, before it's gone
