Just place Messi in 1987 and Maradona in 2018. Very different. No tackles from behind. Both are tough Argentinians. You cannot bully them. But Maradona rode most of the reckless tackles. Not sure if Messi would. Maradona on a carpet and protected. Just watch his goal of the century in 1986 and his goal against Belgium. Thes are scored when it matters. And Argentina 1986 was not as good as the 2022. The difference was Diego.

It was said in 1986 that any standard European team that played quarter final would have won world cup had it had Maradona in their team. He was unstoppable by any defense side then.

Maradona was the SOUL of his teams. He can single-handedly beat a top team in the world, England, Brazil...not to mention that he brought Napoli all the way from the bottom to the top! Nobody could handle the ball more comfortably than him. Messi can approach Maradona's technical skills, but nowhere close to Maradona's leadership, even with his world cup.

People who are old enough to witness Maradona during his prime will all agree that Maradona was more dangerous to the defenders than Messi. Nobody was comparable to him during his time, not even the Ballon d’or winners (nobody cared back then). He was unstoppable by half of the team (5-6 players) in WC ‘86 (England, Belgium, Italy, etc.). The only way to stop him was to tackle him from behind.

Messi has achieved much more awards with his professionalism, discipline, consistency and longevity. But Messi’s prime was nowhere near Maradona’s prime.

I’m messi fan but maradona was greatest footballer in the history and the reason is with average national team he lifted fifa world cup. With average club napoli he won 2 italia championship. He made napoli a great club. So I would say maradona was the greatest. Messi, pele, cr7 always played along with great clubs so they have achieved this much.

As much people loves Messi and his achievements, Maradona will always come on top. Maradona had it tougher in medium caliber teams whereas Messi played with top of the line teammates that made it easier for his achievements.
