Golden Tours TV is a series of videos discussing some of the places and fantastic destinations our tours visit, for you to both enjoy and to provide some inspiration for when you plan your next trip.

Stonehenge is a place of mystery, majesty, intrigue and wonder. Older than the pyramids and a star of many movies ranging from king Arthur, to this is spinal tap and marvels Thor. But was it Used for human sacrifice? Sacred to druids? Or simply a landing site for aliens? Join us as we shall delve into the world of Stonehenge, how it came to be, what it's made from and why we believe it is there. And thanks to modern science we've entered a time where our knowledge is more complete and precise than ever before! In fact it was only in April 2019 that we finally discovered who built the world famous site.

Today, Stonehenge is managed and maintained by English heritage but it has in fact been a popular tourist site for centuries sometimes to make a profit and sometimes purely for joy. Did you know the last private owner of Stonehenge was a man called Cecil Chubb? A barrister by trade, He lived in the nearby village of Shrewton and he went to an auction in 1915 where he bought Stonehenge for the price of £6,600! The truth is he was actually sent to auction by his wife in order to buy new dining room chairs but decided he'd buy Stonehenge instead. Ahhh men, how much we've learned and how far we've come. Cecil was a thoughtful man though and he gave the site to his wife as a birthday present, sweet. Although we do have the feeling she didn't like her birthday present very much as it was just 3 years later when she gave it to English heritage for free.

Have you ever wondered how the stones came to be placed there? Are you even more curious when I tell you some of them travelled around 150 miles for that to happen? Or maybe you've mused over why these ancient civilisations performed the task? What if I told you it took them around 1000 years to do so. Now you're thinking but why? Well join us on a journey of examination and mystery as we discover Stonehenge.
