I'm the person who submitted the video, thanks Ashley for including it. I was driving home from work on a diverted route (with no diversion signs so relying on my satnav) when I encountered this road. I've only been driving for 2 years, and it's predominantly city/motorway driving, so this scenario was entirely new to me. The fact that a car had just entered the road didn't register with me and I panicked, envisioning someone speeding down the road, or even me just inconveniencing someone. For some reason, I thought it was a good idea to try and reverse on that narrow bit of tarmac and evidently that was a terrible idea. Not included in the footage is me having a minor breakdown before admitting defeat and looking to call a recovery service. Fortunately the gentlemen in the second half of the clip reversed down the road and helped me out of the situation. I still cannot express my gratitude enough for this assistance; it took 5 minutes out of their day but saved me potential hours of anguish. They did not laugh, or judge, or make any rude comments. Also I drive a 1litre Kia Picanto, hence the difficulty getting out of the ditch! Do not judge someone's entire ability to drive by one minor mistake they made; we are all human, we all make mistakes :D

"Men with ven" often get bad press but to their credit when an issue like this occurs they are often excited to help. My sister has had a few accidents in her time, two times in ditches and both times workmen in their vans were first on scene and made great effort to help out.

I'm happy to admit that I'm in the 95%. Thanks for sharing. It's much better to encounter these obstacles from a comfy chair, than have to deal with them in the wild. 👍

I came across one of these today near me. I probably wouldn't have normally turned into the road but after watching this video I looked out for a No Entry sign and there wasn't one so I did turn in to it. Just goes to prove that even after 40+ years on the road you can still learn things. Something that new drivers should take note from, a license doesn't mean you know it all.

There is a road sign pointing into the road.

Quite common in Cornwall where we have roads that you can hedge trim both sides in a micra

Thanks for the refresh about road markings and signs. That would have thrown me too! The second point regarding turning around or 3 point turn, it is best to choose where you turn or at least observe your surroundings. I am lucky to learn from others in places like YouTube. There is a video I saw one where a driver beached her vehicle on a low bridge wall in the dark, with the rear wheels hanging over. The YouTuber who recovers vehicles manage to the vehicle back on the road. If the vehicle had gone over, it was a short drop to a stream!

Living in a rural area I've learned (fortunately not from my mistakes) to be very suspicious of verges - there are a few around me which hide 4+ foot deep drops which you wouldn't suspect at first glance.

Good learning point. The flip side is to be careful to not blindly follow SAT NAV instructions because the reverse could happen.

So nice to see those guy helped her out, always good to see people like that are out there on the roads, I don't blame her for hesitating here, I didn't know about this until you posted about it, had I seen that road id have been reluctant to follow the sat nav and go on it.

Didn’t know this until you mentioned it. However, I’ve also never come across such a thing when driving.

"Now Ms. Jones, I'd like you to turn around in the road using forward and reverse gears. Try not to touch the kerb...or end up in the ditch".

Reminds me of the story about the fella who nan said in an emergency always look for the helpers. There are more good people in the world than we realise. Sure, this was just a couple of lads giving a car a push, but she'd have been pretty screwed without that. Bravo those lads.

Best way to learn, have a near miss or awkward situation. No damage except to the old ego.

When young (23?) I was riding my motorbike slightly off road once and ended up in a ditch. 750cc and big, I was stuck; but a nice bloke with a small tractor helped me out, didn't say a word of admonition. Taught me 2 lessons, that! The second was how to be helpful and kind.

BTW I have done enough holiday driving in Wales and Cornwall to know the road markings. But only from experience. Good to have the precise rules explained.

Junctions marked like that are all over the place on country roads. I can think of a few places around me where a minor road kind of splits just before the junction with like a triangle of grass between the junctions that are marked like that.

Living in the countryside my whole life, it amazes me how much people struggle on roads like these, but I guess thats just where I drive on them on a daily basis.

Been driving for about 20 years and I didn't know this. Thanks for highlighting it as it does make sense when you really think about it.

Yes if you go around a lot of country back roads, I've come across loads.
A lot are single track with traffic both ways and passing places.
Even though I've been driving for years these roads are scary for anyone.
