One of my favorites is “Sabotage” from 1936. If I were to make a Hitchcock top 10, it would definitely appear somewhere on it.

Although most would consider Psycho Hitch’s best film, and it’s innovative for sure, but I would pick The Birds as my personal favorite. It’s also innovative, and a slow start, but I like that about it. It’s the film of his I rewatch the most. Vertigo is more innovative than Psycho conceptually. Rope doesn’t belong, a failed one-take experiment. Rebecca is more of a Selznick pic. So axe that one. Here’s my top five in order: THE BIRDS, VERTIGO, REAR WINDOW, PSYCHO, FRENZY. His early British period is of interest as well, with greats like The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes.

My personal top 5: 1) Dial M for Murder, 2) Rebecca, 3) Spellbound, 4) The Lady Vanishes, 5) Rear Window
If pressed to name honorable mentions I'd probably go Rope and then the 2nd version of The Man Who Knew Too Much.

I’d include “The Man Who Knew Too Much”

Rebecca is a bit staid, Victorian, and slow-developing for my sensibility; thus, I can't easily relate to it (perhaps it's the Selznick influence). I would lean toward including a film such as Saboteur (a fast-moving thriller) or possibly Lifeboat (which I found incredibly disturbing and jarring, but eye-opening) in the #9 or #10 spot.

"Notorious" is the obvious oversight here as it's easily one of Hitchcock's 10 best. I would replace "Dial M for Murder" and "Rope" with "Notorious" and any one of several other excellent films.

While his British films are terrific I guess I'll have to go with Vertigo, NBNW, The Birds and Psycho.

I havw seen ALL Hitchcock's films (some many times) with one exception - a musical he directed in his English years called "Waltzes from Vienna." I am sorry that you have neglected all his years in England. The original "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "The 39 Steps" are surely outstanding - and so is "Young and Innocent". Of his American years, I'd choose as his very best "Strangers in a Train", "Vertigo" and "Notorious".

Top 10:1:North by Northwest, 2:Shadow of a Doubt, 3:Foreign Corespondent, 4:The Lady Vanishes, 5:Saboteur, 6:Strangers on a Train, 7:Rear Window, 8:Dial M for Murder, 9:To Catch a Thief, 10:Psycho. I can't argue with The Birds. I've never seen Rebecca. I'll have to watch it.

Agree with 7 or 8 of your picks, but truly dislike The Birds, and find North/Northwest lightly entertaining, but less than compelling (both are very commercial "sell-out" films, IMO). I would replace them with classics such as Notorious and Spellbound.
