In wildlife photography we often believe that we are subject to the whims of what today brings us… that we can’t control our surroundings. While this may in part be true, we can also often predict our surroundings with shocking accuracy. This ability makes the best wildlife photographers stand out from the rest and can help level up your skill to become a better wildlife photographer.

Really admire the folks who can put in so much time and patience for amazing results and videos. And yes, your crow endeavor was really great!

Your right that when you pull off a planned image it's an amazing feeling.

I was out and I found a flock of finches that were landing on a fence post over and over and they were letting me get within a few meters which is rare for this flighty species, so I returned and setup a perch and they landed straight onto it making for a nice image, where the fencepost images day previous looked poor.

It really helps going to a place 2 days in a row like you did with the swifts, but for me its difficult with a busy weekend schedule, usually if you return the next week the birds have moved on.

My style is a bit of a combination. I will pick the location for the day’s shoot with plans to go after something that I know will be out at that time of year and location. However, the best laid plans of mice and men frequently do not pan out. I try to observe what is happening around me and let the day dictate the theme. Today, I went to a location that usually has a lot of birds. The fields were in bloom with wildflowers and bees and butterflies were everywhere. I spent the next few hours watching and photographing them. I never took a photo of a bird today although there were plenty singing in the surrounding trees.

I would add that planning is good so long as it does not involve manipulating the wildlife itself in any way. Examples might be baiting or playing birdsong to emulate a rival.
