I think the difference between the American Revolution and the French Revolution was that the Americans were not year 0 revolutionaries. The Americans while they took radical means and in lots of ways departed from what was the norm still had profound respect for tradtion and the societies that built them. Even the contitution is largely inspired by english common law, the bill of rights and thinkers like Locke, which may seem odd as they were literally fighting the British. They wanted to completely self govern but not completely abandon their roots and history and understood what good things the british and other europeans had in their society. The French were year 0 revolutionaries, they felt all of history was a mistake, ideas such as everyone is born good it's only "tyranny" holding them back, and that the ideal is total freedom to do what you want as opposed to any appeal to history, tradtion or common decency was what imo made it so bloody, so violent and so damaging. What us worrying is that mindset seems to be prevailing society now, the idea that all of history is bad and a mistake, any appeal to tradtion or decency is oppressive or bad, and so called "liberals" demonising and policing people's personal freedoms if they don't fit their ideal.

An overlooked genocide committed by the French Revolution was the Vendee genocide, when the revolutionary government massacred the peasants of the region of Vendee (90% by some estimates). The people murdered were almost all peasants and commoners.

In the John Adams miniseries, the titular character said that France went from monarchy to anarchy to monarchy.

The third estate was not only poor people though. The emerging middle class of the 18th century that became increasingly educated and wealthy where dissatisfied that they had no say in the government.

Thinking about the American Revolution they weren't trying to reinvent their society. They wanted was a republic rather than a democracy, which they considered dangerous and short lived. In some ways they wanted the liberties that the British espoused in their ideology but weren't practicing in the colonies. Granted the ideals they had were radical for the time (i.e. "we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights...") but there was redistribution of wealth or seizing of property or giving the state power over it's people. They may have seen that as the acts of a monarchy because monarchs did that without the rule of law. What they wanted was what they already had and they wanted to keep it. As one militia officer from the battles around Boston told and interviewer, whom he rebuffed regarding the reasons Americans fought (taxes, oppressions, philosophies, etc.), the reason they fought was "we governed ourselves and we always would govern ourselves."

Well, they had a lot of theory, but little or no practical experience. Laurance J. Peter can explain it all.

In the 200+ years since the revolution, France is now on its fifth republic and has been an empire and restored the monarchy.

I think it is safe to call it a failure.

The French Revolution did not fail. It's achievements were never removed, not even after the Congress of Vienna. What the hell is this.

No it didn't. While the American "revolution" was by slave owners for slave owners, the ideas and principles of the French Revolution have prevailed everywhere in the free world. They are a foundation of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and thrive in the European Union. While the US and the yUK dig deeper into authoritarianism. Please read a book.

The French Revolution I would argue is the most successful in history, in regards to global influence

Which is unfortunate. Very cringe
