This is arguably my most beloved game in my collection.

Correction: Due to being half asleep making this video at points, I misremembered the dots vs cost thing. That is an error. Babies are the enemies of sleep and accuracy :)

Ultimately, roll player suffers from two things for me. It's all about rolling up a character and then doing nothing with them. BUT THE EXPANSIONS LET YOU DO look, golden rule, if an expansion "fixes" a game, I will normally just pass on it. The other thing is, well, the characters are just kinda bland and uninteresting. It feels wedged between puzzle game and having fun with character generation, and for me, i'd rather play the two games i recommend at the end that focus on each of those aspects more.

I'm thoroughly impressed (and find it quite funny) that the creators were able to take what is arguably one of the most stressful experiences playing D&D and turn it into a game. Thanks for covering! I'm going to share this with my D&D group.

Monsters and Minions adds a LOT to this game. Well worth it if you like the base game but feel it's missing that little something.

Very clever idea and seemingly good execution. Would love to try it!

I was hoping this upload would have been the Deluxe sequel to Snakes and Ladders. This will do. 😤

I really like roll player, the expansions make it better! I noticed a small rules goof in your explanation. The cost of the card is the number in the top right corner, not the number of dots. The dots are used during setup.

It would be fun to run a one shot with whoever you built.

Small error at 2:24, market cards cost the number of gold written on top right.
The one or two dots determine in which order they should be stacked during game setup, with one dot cards on top (weaker, come out earlier), and two dots on the bottom (stronger, come out later in the game)

This is uncanny timing

I literally bought Roll Player like 5 minutes before you posted this 😦

What a great video!

1) This sounds like a fun solo play more than a group game. Interaction being limited to the drafting and shop seems dull. Even Imperial Settlers, a decent engine building game I'm planning on selling due to its lack of player Interaction, has more than Roll Player.

2) As a group game, this could be a very roundabout way of making characters for an actual medieval fantasy RPG, maybe?

3) I've only played it twice (both at conventions), but Sagrada is such a fun exercise in slowly increasing pain, haha. It was the first game that really hammered home the feeling of "Oh god, I've done this to myself" in the final rounds.

Dots on card denote if they are earlier or later in the Market. The number in the circle is the item cost

Have you played Roll Player with its expansion Monsters AND Minions? If so any improvement in end game?

As always nicely done. Agree on Sagrada being a more engaging dice placement game.

My partner and I love this game and tbh im not very interesting in using the character after, the puzzle and limited player interactions is a plus for us lol

The tedium of the endgame is fixed by the expansions, where you go and fight monsters with your new build.

This is a strange case of where I think that the criticisms offered don't really.... I don't know, I think it's OK to have a dice placement puzzle game that uses this D&D character creation theme. The theme isn't exactly D&D, it's D&D character creation. So the criticism offered to me feels like it amounts to "I think this should be a completely different game". But I get that you like Sagrada better, as you said, it's more "focused". That makes sense.

I wanted to like this one - but found it to be very dry (also the aesthetics and price don’t help). The theme gets lost pretty quickly - you’re not creating a character in any way, just trying to achieve a series of meaningless pre-set numerical objectives. I enjoy the experience of Sagrada a lot more, even if it may not be as mechanically sound as Roll Player.

I always found the concept neat, but flawed. I'm sure it's a fun game but the concept of not at all using the character you created for anything is a turn-off. I know there are add ons that let you, but it's hard to reason going all-in on it without knowing if it's something I'd enjoy in the first place. Great video!
