It seems to me that you should have started with WHY you separate a binary number into groups of three. A 3-bit binary value can hold the decimal range of 0 to 7 which is the range of digits in an Octal number.

Thank you! That is much simpler and faster than finding a conversion chart or punching numbers into a calculator. I was not taught the 4-2-1 method. Now I need to find a similar fast and easy way video to convert OCT to BIN.

If any of you have the following question: WHY do we have to separate a binary number into groups of three?
The answer is: Binary numbers are separated into groups of three when converting to octal because the octal system uses base-8, and 2^3 (or 8) is the closest power of 2 that's less than or equal to 8. This means each octal digit can be represented by three binary digits.
