Ṇamōkāra mantra is the most significant mantra in Jainism. This is the first prayer recited by the Jains while meditating. There is no mention of any particular names of the Gods or any specific person. The prayer is done towards the guṇa (the good qualities) of the Gods, teachers and the saints. Jains do not ask for any favours or material benefits from the tirthankaras or monastics. This mantra simply serves as a gesture of deep respect towards beings whom they believe are spiritually evolved, as well as to remind the people of their ultimate goal i.e. moksha (liberation).

Namo Arihantanam - I bow in reverence to Arihants
Namo Siddhanam - I bow in reverence to Siddhas
Namo Ayariyanam - I bow in reverence to Acharyas
Namo Uvajjhayanam - I bow in reverence to Upadhyayas
Namo Loye Savva Sahunam - I bow in reverence to all Sadhus
Eso Panch Namoyaro - This five-fold salutation
Savva Pavappanasano - Destroys all sins
Mangalanache Savvesim - And amongst all auspicious things
Padhamam Havai Mangalam - Is the most auspicious one

With the above invocation repeated several times every day the Jains bow with hands folded in Anjali (worship) in the four cardinal directions, East, West, South and North. While reciting the Namokar Mantra, we are bowing down with respect to Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharya (heads of sadhus and Sadhvis), Upadhyaya (those who teach scriptures to sadhus and Sadhvis), Sadhus (monks, who have voluntarily given up social, economic and family relationships) and Sadhvis (nuns, who have voluntarily given up social, economic and family relationships). Collectively, they are called Panch Parmesthi (five supreme spiritual people).
