Culturedog Sam Hatch has survived the holidays yet again, and even though he didn’t buy himself many LDs over the past few weeks, there have been some very generous benefactors out there making sure that the CultureChristmas is shiny and bright with fresh LaserDiscs!

Ben-Hur is one of my all-time favourite movies. A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me the original CLV Letterbox edition of Ben-Hur on LaserDisc. Oddly enough, it doesn't have chapter stops. I'd buy the 35th Anniversary CAV Edition if I ever come across a copy in good condition for a good price. I do have the Blu-Ray Double Feature that has both The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur. Both movies look incredible on Blu-Ray but I think that Ben-Hur has the edge.

When you said they were old man DVD's I thought it was a joke, thanks to my Dad I've probably seen The Quite Man 100 times, another family favourite is Ben Hur, I'm slightly obsessed and will almost any version at the drop of a hat, I was a bit gutted I never got around to seeing the new version in 3D although I've seen quite a few times "flat", heck I've even done a commentary on 2 versions. That box set you've got is awesome, top video and great to have you back, the Yoda hate is awesome also.

Great video as always. That Moyke is a character for sure, but as we also know he is a good guy. That was nice of him to hook you up with those box sets. I have the Ben Hur set as well. Picture quality isn't bad considering how much resolution is lost due to the extreme aspect ratio.

Culturedog Hi, how's it going? Glad to see that you have enjoyed your Christmas. I absolutely love the look of the red box of the Ten Commandments, The Quiet Man box looks awesome as well, the Ben Hur box set made me jealous as all hell. The THX 1138 Laserdisc is easily a must own, since nobody has made a Blu Ray of the original 1971 version or the Laserdisc version. It's also cool to see that you're wearing a Star Wars Christmas hat, despite my extremely fiery hatred of the so called "Sequels", i am glad to see you're still positive. One little question, is AC3 on Laserdisc really that much better than it is on DVD? I know DTS Laserdiscs use the full bitrate and better masters so i understand that. Most people say that the vast majority of Blu Rays have superior audio to the Best Laserdiscs with the exception of a few titles. What's your thought on this audio stuff?

Those Ten Commandment and Ben Hur LDs are beautiful...."old man discs" LOL, shit I wouldn't mind owning them! Patriot Games is probably my favorite Jack Ryan film so far, do you have Clear/Present Danger and Hunt/Red October on LD or blu ray? I'm not surprised George Lucas altered THX course he did! He hates all his original versions for some sick and twisted reason lol. Not a bad haul!

LOVE the LD video updates! I found a LD player at a thrift store last year and have been collecting LD’s ever since. Up to about 200 or so, now. I found a factory-sealed, limited edition boxed set of Schindler’s List last weekend that I’m pretty impressed with. Only bitch is trying to watch these things on my 4K tv, tho. Even with an upscaler, the picture looks like hell. Any suggestions???

The original theatrical release of THX-1138 was butchered by the studio. They cut out stuff without the approval of George Lucas or Walter Murch. The film was re-released to theaters in 78 or 79 after the success of Star Wars, and Lucas was able to restore the cut footage. This "restored" version is what was released on LaserDisc and VHS in the 90s.

@Culturedog Off topic and i apologise that i have to annoy you with this little question but, is AC3 really that much better on Laserdisc than it is on DVD? I always hear different answers, some people say that they are pretty comparable, others say it's better than the DVD, what are your thoughts on this? Another thing is people say that the vast majority of Blu Rays sound far better than the best Laserdiscs, i just want to know what are your thoughts on this stuff, hope you have had a Happy New Year so far.
