Love, care, empathy and compassion are great but so are toughness and boundary setting, not being taken advantage of. Here’s how we can grow into the challenge of managing that tension.
Hard left: Love solves everything.
Hard right: Ouch! I got played. Toughness solves everything.
Hard center: Ouch! People fight back. Tough love is the answer.
Hard choices: Ouch! The middle way isn’t a win-win. Tough love is the question. When to be tough, when to be loving? Where to humor and accommodate where to set firm uncompromising boundaries. For hard choices, you need a clutch pedal between your empathy and generosity. You’ve got to try to understand folks whether you’re going to help or fight them. But you can’t afford to understand them if it automatically compels you to help them. I want to empathize with everyone but I can’t afford to help everyone. So I need that clutch pedal so I can understand them and still be tough with them if necessary.
