Lyrics:

Somewhere beyond the sea
Somewhere waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing

Somewhere beyond the sea
She's there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms
I'd go sailing

It's far beyond the stars
It's near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon

We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing

I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet (I know we'll meet) beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing

I've counted and I've counted... I love this melody and song, I simply cannot figure out why there are only twelve (count them, twelve) measures per strain.
Also, there is plenty of rephrasing of the simple melody, plenty of modulation to other keys, but there is only one basic melody. This runs counter to the standard American Songbook format of something like A, A, B, A, bridge, A. Did anybody ever notice this?
Nobody has ever fully explained this striking musical asymmetry. All I ever see are interpretations of the song lyrics. Yeah, that's valuable. ha ha
