ENNEAGRAM TYPES 1, 3, 5 | The Logical Style Group | Enneagram Harmonic Triad

Enneagram Harmonic Groups (AKA Conflict Coping Styles) helps show how each type copes with conflict and difficulties. Harmonic groups also show how we defend against disappointment.

Each grouping handles conflict, obstacles, and disappointment in one of three ways (although each type in that group has their own variation.)

The three Enneagram Harmonic Groups are broken down in to the Positive Outlook Style, the Logical Style, and the Reactive Style.

In this video I am teaching on the Logical Style Group that consists of enneagram types 1, 3, and 5. Each of these types have competency and being logical in mind when faced with disappointment and/or conflict but has their own variations on these.

Types 1, 3, and 5 all put emphasis on different ways of being logical and competent, they all manage feelings in different ways, and all have different ways of relating to systems and rules… but it is all in a logical minded way.

Hi! I'm Hillary, welcome to my channel, Enneagram and Coaching! I love teaching a simplified way for you to understand the Enneagram while developing clarity and compassion for yourself and the people in your life! I love coming along side you to help you land on your Enneagram Type.

Sometimes people have an easy time landing on their type but other times they have a hard time because they can relate to 2 types and have a hard time figuring out which one they are. For example the 4w5 and the 5w4 have so many similarities that it can be hard to know which one you are. That's why I teach on this platform. I love to help you in any way I can. And when my videos just aren't helping you totally land on your type I have sessions you can purchase where I can come alongside you and help you see things that you might not be able to see.

Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing! It truly blesses me!

I think type 1s (my type) repress feelings because of Resentment: They don't view them as "correct", so they act against their feelings to pursue (what they perceive as) a greater objective. Type 3s repress feelings because of Deceit: They hide the parts that they think others perceive as unlikeable to trick themselves and everyone else into thinking they're something else. Type 5s repress because of Avarice: They don't have the time or energy or resources to pay attention to their feelings so they ignore that they're even there. That's what I've gathered about these types; they view feelings as another demand on them so they try to manage it in some way.

This was so true as a 5! You are definitely one of my favorite enneagram speakers... you really dive deep into your stuff. Thank you!

Haha the 5 staying busy with the mind: yes! I was nervous about the COVID test but I didn’t know I was nervous about the COVID test because it seems so silly to be nervous about it in the grand scheme of things. And instead of admitting I was nervous, I just dived right into my mind and started studying epicurean philosophy to feel better 😂

Definitely true about the 5! I will repress and distract myself until I am alone to deal. Then I will think through, process, and emote. My brain will take over again at some point and then I put my emotions back in their compartment until later.

I think I love watching foreign tv shows because of the immersive escape it gives.

So on point for type 1! While I do have to do lists, I don't want to deal with them when I'm stressed about a problem...I just want to relax. When I bounce back, that's when I deal my to do list again.

I have found over the years that I have 2 different reactions to terrible situations. The explosive anger, and the ambivalent, emotionless “oh that is a thing that is happening, and here are the reasons why” responses.

As a teenager, I had perfected that zero emotion state, and honestly, I would do almost anything to have that skill back. However, having that type of response should have been a signal that I am in a completely unhealthy situation.

Now I know better, and this is why I was torn between the 5 and the 8 when I started learning about the enneagram.

Great video Hilary! I apologize for not responding sooner, but I was taking a little more time than usual to figure out what to comment. (For those unfamiliar, I am a 1w2 sp/sx INFP) I had a bit of an opposite reaction to this video than the reactive triad one. In that video, I reacted at first feeling like I related heavily to the triad and then seeing disconnect the further you elaborated. For this logical triad however, I was at first a little confused but as you explained for the type 1 it started to make a lot more sense.

I think part of the disconnect for me comes from the fact that I'm in the gut triad and that as a 1, anger/resentment is our core weakness. Being very aware of that angry part of myself can make it hard to relate to being "calm." I much more relate to a different word you used, "tense." I felt pretty embarrassed when you said that, I am too familiar with that state of being. I also think my MBTI influences things a little bit. A lot of my personal rules to live by are derived from feelings and experiences and trying to treat others how I'd like to be treated.

With all this said, I absolutely resonate to the competency triad as I am very focused on being correct and sensible. This is painfully true. It's so true that it recently come up with me getting absolutely livid with a friend over a video game, Civilization 6. With my friends we have several rules of conduct (that I played a big part in crafting) where we agree to not to compete directly with each other until all the computer players have been defeated. Long story short, I got livid because the spirit of the rules were not being followed and that a loophole was being exploited. I shouldn't have gotten as mad as I did, but fortunately the problem has been resolved, it will never happen again, and I've learned new approaches to better a close friendship of mine.

One last note of clarity, I 100% channel my feelings into activities, a bit too excessively. I have a nasty habit of trying to play games perfectly and this can burn me out of enjoyment. It's a very hard habit to break but it helps relieve a lot of anxiety for me.

Ah Ha! Getting lost in projects and doing (or try to do) them perfectly. Hard Core 1 and my house is a direct reflection of this.

Amazing video! Great information.. and so true. I’m famous at work of being cutting through the butter 🧈 with logical analysis. Being a 3... an extrovert did not make any sense of having this rather classic 5 ability.
After this video it all makes sense. 3 is not as strictly logical as 5 but more forward pushing and cutting through the inclarities with logic.

this was so helpful!! thank you. from a type 5, i definitely take solving conflict from a logical perspective. i will put all emotions to the side and solely focus on the facts. ive actually had problems with a type 8 because of this; i wasn't reactive enough, so it seemed like i didnt care.

My husband is a type 3 and he told me he has a long to do list and it is causing him depression and stress. He doesn’t want me to help with it. But he’s obsessed with completing these tasks. Not emotionally about it. Very logically. He wants to do it step by step too.

Wow! I'm a 3 and I filled a notebook at the beginning of the pandemic with to-do lists and how to be competent and productive through a schedule.

🙌🏽 I love how knowing the Enneagram brings awareness.... and through awareness we can be more healthy both personally and in relationships. ❤️. Great video on the triads! Sandy. 5w4

As a 5, I often find myself "waiting for more information" when stressful or challenging situations come up. If I am confused, I always assume I am missing some information. This is the reason why I don't react. To react without all the information needed would be foolishness, and 5's have no ability to deal with being viewed as fools. My ego can comfortably deal with all kinds of social rejection or judgement, but not that!

As always, brilliant video! I'm in the positive outlook style (I'm a 2) and I'm really looking forwards to the next video in the series! I love learning about these!

I have a few people in my life who are in this triad. The fives really rarely like rules! (😂 I never noticed this before you brought it to my attention!)

Love the videos, thx! 😄
