Maddux was an umpires worst nightmare. If they give him a strike call where it was a ball, he'll hit that spot all game. If not, he'll work the corners until he finds that spot.

Greg was like Picasso painting those corners

Interesting interpretation of the strike zone from Erig Gregg there

Also notice how he finishes in a stance ready to field a hit. Multiple Gold Glove winner!

Maddux could thread a needle with a grain of sand from 60 feet away. His changeup was second to only Pedro Martinez. I grew up in the steroid era yet the three ballplayers I remember most were Maddux, Martinez and the big unit, Randy Johnson. What a time to be alive

90s Braves were a tough club - 3 of the best pitchers of the time in their line-up.

A fast fastball will get you drafted. Command of it will let you stay. Maddox was a painter out there with those two seamers.

The next closest pitcher that I have seen was Roy Halladay. I am a Yankees fan, but watching him when he was on the Blue Jays freeze the Yankees better was majestic. RIP

Wow. It's amazing how he hits those targets that were edited in, knowing where the ball was going to go.... amazing....

He was so fun to watch when we were coming up.

Greg was so good at pitching that his anticipation for hits with his Gold glove abilities were overlooked, but he is also arguably the greatest Fielding pitcher!

Jim kaat might be the only one to compare

I remember him throwing a no hitter into the 6th once, before the game was called due to rain

I could watch him pitch all day..look at the toe tap on his right foot after every pitch, right into his defensive positioning. AUTOMATIC!! He could
have thrown mid to upper 90s if he wanted but took control over velo..

I believe Eric Gregg also called Livans No hitter, Widest strike zone every afforded to mlb pitchers. You could toss that thing in the other battersbox and get away with it. Miss me some mad dog.

Pitching was a lot more engaging to watch when the fastballs were barely into the 90s. Pitchers HAD to have better command.

Honestly I don’t think Maddux would be that good today with the smaller strike zones. He’d have to throw more challenge pitches and he’d get nailed.

Here’s a fun thought. How many called strikes in his career did Greg get called that weren’t actually strikes? Like a Percentage. It’s wild how far off the plate a lot of those are. Not even close

Not just the "command" goat, he is the greatest pitcher of all time
