A restored Gnome rotary engine gets a run at Omaka in New Zealand on June 15 2018.
The engine is an original but fitted with many modern parts made from scratch by Classic Aero Machining and in time will be fitted to an airworthy WW1 aircraft.

Is the cooling effected by running without the cowling on for so long, or is the cowling just there to catch the oil ? It would have been nice to see the starting of this engine.

I thought the term was "radial" - all engines that drive a propeller are "rotary".
