John Ringling had the original wooden bridge constructed in 1926 to connect Sarasota to his recently purchased St. Armand's, which he developed into what is now known as St. Armand Circle Shops. There was a second bridge built in 1960 by the Army Corps of Engineers that resembled the second span that connects Bird Key with St. Armands. That bridge remains today.

You can see a framed photograph of Ringling's first real estate office from circa 1927 which now serves as the world-class Cafe L'Europe, on the right of the entrance.
