First of all, I doubt that gun would do anything permanent to Elphelt considering the shenanigans of Guilty Gear.
Second of all, it's absolutely intentional. Later on we get an Amazing Grace section in the bridge/whimsy section of the song. Also, Elphelt is canonically born on Christmas. So that's fun.
Thirdly, god that animation is so good.
