The years had been good, but you couldn’t shake the feeling that something had been missing. It haunted you in the quiet moments the most, in the slow mornings over tea and the silent evenings filled with only melodies from the radio. It was ever present, that lingering feeling of loneliness. It was the same feeling you got when you left the house, questioning if you’d left the stove on, if you’d turned the lights off. There was an absence you didn’t have a name for, a hole you never could fill.

That day in particular, progressed like any other. You were to attend the gala celebrating the accomplishments that your bosses had achieved at the company this year in the evening. Everything in you wanted to skip it, yet your presence had been made mandatory given how big of an asset you were to those successes.

By the time the evening rolled around, you were clad in the soft hues you felt the most comfortable in, floating across the floor as though wings carried you. Your coworkers couldn’t stop remarking on how wonderful you looked, which brought hues of red to line your cheeks. Aside from their comments, it was the most you felt like yourself in a while. There was a grace to your movements, a grin almost always on your features as you’d laugh and charm those around you. After the dinner had been served, the dancing was to follow and with the way the evening had been going, you were more than content to linger near the wall with a soft gaze as couples, friends and peers took the floor. The music was pleasant enough, leading you to sway your head ever so slightly.

“I’m surprised to find you here rather than on the dancefloor.” A voice breaks up the melodies, causing you to quirk your head in search of its owner.
“Yeah? Why is that?” You shoot back, perhaps a bit too fast on defence.
“Merely because it seems as though you’d rather like to.” He murmurs, gesturing idly with a nod of his head to the way your body seems to be responding, instinctually to the rhythm of the music.
With your newfound realization, you give a soft laugh, nodding your head in agreement.
“I suppose you’re right, although–”
“Grant me the honour?” The stranger sets his drink down, offering you a hand and a smile. It fills you with an unfamiliar warmth, that leaves you both confused and clarified. Had it been so cold, before?
“It’d be a pleasure.” Your hand moves on impulse into his. Within moments you’re whisked away onto the dancefloor, the music slowing to a lull. He brings you close, a hand on your waist while holding your other in his own with the delicacy one might expect when handling glass. Your gaze falls downward as your free hand rests against his shoulder, ensuring that you don’t step on his toes as you move in time with the notes.
“I’m not too horrid to look at, am I?” The stranger snickers, tilting his head in attempts to catch another glimpse of your face.
Your gaze shoots up all too fast, an apologetic smile lining your lips. You shake your head, trying to contain the giggle. “No! Not at all, I–” You hold his gaze for the first time, your smile slowly fading. What was this solace? Your hand holds his tighter, as if you fear letting go of someone you’ve only just met.
“I–” You try again, although the words catch in your throat. Heat rushes to your cheeks, water to your eyes. What was happening? Something akin to relief rushed through you, although you couldn’t explain why.
“Are you alri–” The stranger starts, but his fate soon becomes the same as yours. His brows furrow, and for some inexplicable reason the hand on your waist tugs you closer.
It feels like a lifetime has passed between you two, and when you come to your senses you feel warm tears roll down your cheeks. You have to let out a soft laugh, giving your head a shake in hopes of drawing some sense back to it.
“I’m sorry, have we met?”
“I… was wondering that myself.” The stranger, who seems to be anything but, laughs too.
For the first time, you don’t have to wonder if you’d left the stove or the lights on. All those years spent cold seemed to come to thaw, a new warmth blossoming in your chest. It felt like finally coming home, after the longest of days.

The mind might forget, my darling, but the soul never will.

You and I and the things that happen between us and a lot of contradictions, your fear and my faith, your departure and my stay, trying to hold on and aversion at the same time!
