Показать описание
Tensions were triggered once again along Assam's border with Nagaland on Wednesday when Naga villagers reportedly opened fire at a 6-member team of Assam police and forest officials who had gone to investigate alleged encroachments at the Dissoi Valley reserved forest in Jorhat district's Mariani.
An official from Assam said: "Our sources had informed us that people from Nagaland were clearing land where they had done so earlier. I came to investigate with 4 border outpost personnel. As soon as they saw us, they fired 4 rounds. We had to disperse and came back.
"According to reports, Naga villagers have cut down many trees near the Naginijan tea estate in Jorhat, an area that is contested by both states. Meanwhile, Assamese villagers near the border have claimed that they are constantly terrorized by people from Nagaland. At the same time, they have urged the local administration to ensure protection.
