Having an Untroubled Heart in a Troubled World

Jesus’ words in John 14—“Do not let your heart be troubled”—remind us that even in a broken world, peace is possible. The heart, described as our life’s control center, can be weighed down by anxiety, fear, failure, and uncertainty, but Jesus offers a path to live above our circumstances. His strategy? Go to God, go to people, and go to action. This isn’t about escaping reality in a cocoon; it’s about facing life head-on with faith. Like Peter, we may stumble in hard places, but Jesus meets us there. The journey to an untroubled heart begins by stepping into trouble—with courage, honesty, and trust.

I’ve had anxiety my whole life. I’m 69 now, and I still deal with it. I still wake up in the night with my heart racing. I still have trouble falling asleep. I still overeat sometimes just trying to feel better. Becoming a Christian didn’t make all that go away, but it gave me a place to turn. Over the years, I’ve learned how to deal with it better. Not perfectly, but better.

What stands out to me is that Jesus said this right before He went to the cross. He knew His friends were about to face fear and confusion. He said, “You believe in the Father, believe in me too.” He wasn’t walking away from them. He was promising He would still be with them, even when they could not see Him. There is hope and assurance in that. No matter what I go through, I know He is still here.

Jesus is the key. The key to peace. The key to hope. The key to everything. It is all about Jesus.

Facing our fears releases anxiety. Hiding from them exasberates anxiety.

This is so needed right now. I need it! Taking my anxiety into what is causing it, or going purposely toward what scared me? I am a chicken. But, God help me!

Worry led me to do exactly what I shouldn’t have, instead of warning me. It’s a serious mistake that can never be undone and has caused irreparable trouble in my heart.

I joined a cancer survivor group about a year and a half ago. Lots of uncertainty and distress have been shared by everyone in the group. Seeking out other troubled hearts and sharing brings peace. The question then becomes... how can I deal with the rest of the troubled world?

It has irritated me for a long time that Peter went into danger - after having been warned that he would deny Jesus three times before the rooster crowed - and stayed there. If he was that afraid, he would have left. He would especially have left after the first denial. And extra-especially after the second. The guy could not have been THAT stupid. But it wasn't until the rooster crowed that he seems to have recognized his failure even a little bit. How could this be? The answer I've found was that Peter didn't see what he was doing as denying Jesus. He thought of it as something else - something courageous. I think he thought he was lying to the enemy so that he could be near Jesus - to help when the time came to help or otherwise do something heroic. Our ability to deceive ourselves is amazing.
