To everyone saying it's not a bowfin:
It's 100% a bowfin.
They are very territorial and rather aggressive fish and fun as hell to fight. At 2-4 lbs they will even launch themselves out of the water when hooked and reeled.

There's a small river/big creek near me where I can catch them left and right. Just need to have minimum 8lb test (well, preferably) and know that if you try to pull them straight up out the water they can cut your line if they thrash their head if they took your lure good. That and their mouths are incredibly tough with a good deal of tiny serrated teeth, so I recommend fish grippers and pliers to handle anything near their mouths to remove hooks.

That is a bow fin but people from North Minnesota like to call them dog fish because if you leave them out of water for too long they will start to make a barking noise

That’s actually a great catch. Bowfins are pretty interesting to research about, since these are prehistoric species of ancient fish. I’m my area (Ontario), they are pretty rare and can be only found at certain areas (mainly the St Lawrence, Lake Simcoe and Great Lakes area).
