“In Victorian times, it was common to capture the memories of loved ones who had passed on through postmortem photography. As a final tribute to their relatives, people would dress them in their finest clothing and photograph the deceased in lifelike poses.”

People were extremely poor and couldnt afford to get their pictures taken. So to get at least one photo taken with their whole family they mostly did these kind of pictures to remember their loved ones. Memento Mori.

Fun fact, if you look up any Victorian picture and notice one person looking slightly more clear than the rest, that person was actually dead when the pic was taken

My mom told us that this was customary as well in her younger years, she was born in the late 40's, so this would still be a thing during the 1950's if not later.

This was not their last photograph but only one.

It became "fashionable " because Queen Victoria requested a photo of a friend at his funeral since she couldn't go

It's sad, for a lot of the porer population that was probably the only real photographer they could afford and it had to be of a dead loved one

It was extremely expensive. I collect old photos and I can't count how many dead children I have pictures of, as sad as it sounds. But at least they are not forgotten and I treasure them.

It's no different than how people take photos at funerals today, the only difference is in the old days family members are altogether where today the deceased are in coffins.
I know which memory of my late family member I want to have...
Bye Tata I'll be seeing you again one day 😢.
I Love you Tata😢.

This is still done in some countries in Europe. I was at my friend's house when she opened her mail and there was a photo of her cousins including a cousin that had died.

There were even special "stands" that were used. So, the ppl would look like they were standing or sitting without someone else holding them up, ECT. Momento Mori was cuz ppl were poor & Photography was expensive. It was usually the only time most ppl would have their photos taken. They'd want a Photo to remember the LOVED one by. Even if they were deceased.. 😢

❤💔🙏I understand, before she died my grandma left a recording saying happy birthday to my mom. It was very precious to us till the phone company accidentally deleted it. Broke our hearts all over again. God, I miss her. Take pictures and videos all u love, people, pets, places, and urself . . . I thought I had more time.

You neglect to say because photography was too expensive to the immediate public and was only usually affordable at once death and would also be the last time to take said a picture....

Some people only ever got one picture. Their death picture. They never got to see it. Pictures were expensive. Even when I was younger you had to buy film and pay to have it developed. So you didn't take pictures of every meal 500 pictures of your cat. Pictures were for special times. Vacation, birthday partys' pictures of your close friends at a party or concert.

Photography was a new art at the time and people were finally able to have a cheap method (compared to a painting) of looking at their loved ones.

It would have been a small comfort to have a photo of ones dead child, at least it's something. Those photos always get to me the most

We, visited some old great Aunt's, that had, steamer trunks that were full of tintypes and those other types of old photos. In them i came across several of these . So macabre, there was one of a two yr.old, in a coffin filled with flowers .Hanging on the frame, a large crystal locket on a gold chain, with in this was a blonde curl of the childs hair, that the mother had worn until her death, 76 yrs. Later !
This was my, Great, Great Grand mother Angelica Van Alstien .
