Torn apart from her sister Nettie (Halle Bailey) and her children, Celie (Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut, reprising her 2005 role from Broadway) faces many hardships in her life, including an abusive husband simply called Mister (Colman Domingo). I loooove that they brought this back (it was not in the Bway show) AND re-contextualized it so it makes more sense that Shug would sing this AFTER knowing Celie for a longer time than in the original film where they kinda just met.

Taraji is EVERYTHING in this film.

I was so hoping they'd have this song in the new version! I would have been so disappointed if they didn't. 😊
