I like to think that dragons were the only type of life that could survive the flame of Chaos and so when the entire world turned into the ashes, they took over and became the eternal dragons of souls universe.

The "Elden Ring's different endings are the beginnings of each of the souls game" theory is fun, but it makes no sense. So many things are fundamentally different between the games lore-wise.

I love this theory so much because it means that the first flame of the dark souls series is the frenzied flame. Also throughout the games fire keepers are all female npcs that level you (Maidens perhaps???). Plus lots of other things I won’t get into here

I think that the lands between is a literal name, in that I think it's a combination of the multiple different games this would explain enemies shared between the different games and the references in item descriptions

The beginning opening cinematic of dark souls 1 as “empty, unformed and shrouded by fog. A land of grey crags, arch trees and everlasting dragons”. Maybe the frenzied flame literally destroyed everything and this is all that is left. The ancient dragons descending from the modern dragons we find in elden ring. Archtrees have an obvious connection. The first flame may never have been the first or otherwise not literal, it being the frenzied flame and cursing the world. The way the narrator describes the world in such a black and white image conceptually may just be because of how the lands between are nothingness now.
