the moment she goes into thought about losing joel and the way she starts sounding sadder and sadder, is more empowered by the moment she looks at dina and cheers back up as she starts the next verse... man so awesomely animated

I went into this game with an open mind, despite the hate it’s been getting, and halfway through the game I was angry and devastated at the direction it took. But after completing it and experiencing it for myself I can say that it did a phenomenal job in getting me to feel the emotions that it wanted me to, and I actually ended up loving it. I have to give it to ND, they took a huge risk in setting up the structure of the story, you don’t spend years crafting a narrative without having an idea of what the player reactions are going to be, pretty sure they knew that opinions were going to be this intense—and downright vitriolic from certain circles.

To me, this is one of the best cutscenes in all of video games. It's a perfect example of "show, don't tell". If you know how the story plays out, and you take the background of these characters into account, this scene transports so much more than just one girl playing the guitar and another girl listening. All of those subtle gestures and facial expressions are meaningful. For Dina, this is an important scene for her emotional relationship to Ellie. And you can see it in her face. You can see it in her careful distance, she is faced with something wonderful and fragile here.

And some lines of the song text ... Again, if you know the whole story, there is a lot you can read into this. Also the fact that Ellie projects all of her feelings only into the music and doesn't notice Dinas facial expression, and Dinas attempts to make eye contact.

There is so much in there. This scene is a microcosm of the Ellie-Dina story arc.

This is the only “singing a song to significant other” scene that doesn’t start being cringey after ten seconds! Beautiful.


Also, hits way different after playing the whole game. There’s a sad look in Dinas eyes, like she’s hoping Ellie can stay this way and not be consumed by revenge and grief. And “I’ll be gone in a day or two” - the 3 day structure! Wonderful acted and written, god what a good game.
