When Sawyer Velting’s parents found out they were going to have a baby, they were excited.

“It’s a moment of my life I’ll probably never forget,” says Kaylen Velting about how he felt when their little boy was born.

But when Sawyer was just a few months old, mother Ashley found a lump in his abdomen. The lump turned out to be cancer, and plans were made to start chemotherapy to try to shrink it.

The first treatment took place in the hospital. It wasn’t easy, so when the healthcare team suggested Hospital at Home for Sawyer, the Veltings jumped at the opportunity.

Hospital at Home is a specialized home care program offered through Alberta Health Services. Introduced in 2012, it is made possible with support from the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation (ACHF).
