I released a book

Means and Ends: The Revolutionary Practice of Anarchism in Europe and the United States is a new overview of the revolutionary strategy of anarchism between 1868 and 1939. I clearly and accessibly explain the ideas that historical anarchists developed in order to change the world. This includes their views on direct action, revolution, organization, state socialism, reforms, and trade unions. Throughout I demonstrate that the reasons anarchists gave for supporting or opposing particular strategies were grounded in a theoretical framework — a theory of practice — which maintained that, as people engage in activity, they simultaneously change the world and themselves. This theoretical framework was the foundation for the anarchist commitment to the unity of means and ends: the means that revolutionaries propose to achieve social change have to involve forms of activity which transform people into individuals who are capable of, and driven to, both overthrow capitalism and the state and build a free society. The consistent heart of anarchism was the idea that anarchist ends can only be achieved through anarchist means. Cutting through misconceptions and historical inaccuracies, I draw upon a vast assortment of examples to show how this simple premise underpinned anarchist attempts to put theory into action.

I absolutely loved this book, and am actually drawing on it in my bachelors thesis in Philosophy that I'm finishing up now, which is a work on the intellectual history of social anarchism.

This book is very well structured and like all your videos provides some of the most clear explanations on beliefs and practices that I think are fair to all involved. It is the type of book I would give a friend I think is open-minded but unaware of some of the misconceptions of anarchism to, and a book that does as good a job as any I’ve seen to provide real-life examples outside of theory and clear up alot of the muddy debates among anarchists as well. Looking forward to what comes next!

Almost finished with it and I cannot tell you how dog-eared and beat up my copy is now. I've furiously underlined and taken notes the whole time. I don't want to overwhelm with praise, but this book has already made a huge impact on how I see the world and given me so many tools for future exploration of anarchist ideas and for understanding social structures in general. IT IS SO GOOD! If any of y'all haven't picked up a copy yet, I can't recommend it highly enough. The "revolutionary practice of anarchism" bit in the subtitle is no joke; this is a history of ideas--not just events--and you will learn a good deal about how those ideas were put into practice.

It's also cleared up a lot of uncertainty I had about the boundaries between social anarchism and other forms of anarchism and libertarian socialism (turns out I'm more of a social anarchist than I thought :B)

Make sure to read the introduction--it will orient you as to the structure, method, and purpose of the rest of the book. Very helpful. (Edit: Oh, that's what the video is. Sorry, I've been anxious to gush about the book for a while so I got a little ahead of myself :B)

Thanks for putting this into print, Zoe! You're a helluva writer. I think I'm going to be referring back to it to deepen my understanding of anarchism for a long time.
