I think zombie flies would die very fast. But that is a very debatable topic, although it could be that the virus or pathogen does not affect flies and they are solely cariers of the pathogen

I feel like Joe Abercrombie could handle it, since Gene Wolf is no longer with us. Granted, I'm much more of a sci-fi fan and reader but was very impressed with The First Law series.

I think the oilrigs is a bad idea for three reasons: first they are so isolated that the workers might not know about the necessary precautions until it's too late (Assuming a walking dead type virus). Odds are they'll be over run.
Second, they require a lot of mantainance, so you need to have someone capable of this.
Third: if you thought of it, so will others, and if they're anything like some walking dead villains, they would just use a bazooka.
