It's been a few months since I last took a look at coat of arms in Finland! I didn't like the way I did it in the first two parts so I went back to the drawing board and decided to do it this way in the video! let me know what you think and should I do more of these videos.

Just wanted to say thanks for everything you do. It's a service to Finland and the Finnish people to produce content like this that essentially introduces the country and her people to the world.

Nummi is the name of the town but it's also a finnish word, nummi, meaning moor.

The coat of arms of Nummi was later also the coat of arms of Nummi-Pusula since 1981 to 2012.

Hi! You might find this book interesting. The lenghty title is 'Suomen kunnallisvaakunat, Finlands kommunvapen, Municipal Coats of Arms of Finland' by Atte Haikonen. It has an introduction in Finnish, Swedish and also in English. The introduction explains how and why municipalities acquired coats of arms.

Also, the drawing of proposals for Joensuu was made by yours truly, I made that for a note when I visited the archive to see yhe originals 😅

The Tuusula coat of arms seems to sport a part of the wheellock mechanism of a firearm from the time of the Thirty Years War. So, it wasn't an agricultural device, after all, though I certainly can't blame you for guessing so. It took a little bit of research to figure it out, assuming I even figured it out correctly. Tuusula's official website doesn't mention exactly what it is, just calling it generally a gun's lock.

I remember there was some beef between two guys about Jurva and Kurikka when i was in the army i guess i too would be salty if my municipality which is older was merged into a newer one with a worse coat of arms to add insult to injury hahahaha

You can get a severe bacteria based infection from salt water seals, from seal bites or handeling the raw meat, pelt or bones. It makes your hand or fingers to swell. Historically it was treated by ambutating the infected hand or fingers once they became unusable. It's called seal finger in English (or seal hand in Finnish).

Tuusula's website says that the pistol lock on the coat of arms symbolizes the municipality's military history and the noble Stålhane family. The laurel branch on their coat of arms refers to the significant community of artists that influenced Tuusula at the beginning of the 20th century.

Tuusula coat of arms has wheellock of a firearm on the upper part and a bay tree or bay laurel sprig with red berries below.

Heraldry is so interesting, it is lovely to see these bite size videos with info about the coats of arms and the regions they depict.

I like to guess along what they depict, if I don't know. And often times I learn new things even if I know the region or the coat of arm.

Thank you!

Somehow you managed to choose municipalities that don't exist anymore (Nummi, Nauvo, Bergö, Jurva) 😁

I dont know why a video of an Irish fellow talking about Finnish coats of arms in particular feels like my cosy corner in the insane world of the internet.
It feels somewhat tranquil. ❤

I'm born and raised in Joensuu so I'm used to the coat of arms but gotta agree with you that proposal 1 looks way cooler

Change the wikipedia language to Finnish. Municipality pages have much more information in the native language. I'm sure you can handle the language at this point.

An excellent and interesting video!
Just a small point: According to official guidelines, in English you should use the majority language name of the municipality, e.g. not Nauvo but Nagu (with a long 'a') and Porvoo not Borgå (both wovels are a short 'o' btw). This is, of couse, a bit of nitpicking, but those are the rules.
PS. If you believe that all bigger cities try to have impressive coats-of-arms, look at the one of my city, Helsinki.

Greetings from Joensuu! We clearly downgraded our coat of arms, but the one for North Karelia has some similarities to the old ones for Joensuu. Also check out Rääkkylä from the same area, even though it's just a bunch of burning wood, I think it looks great because of the colors.

Kauhava's coat of arms is best, just because of kauhava. But really the alahärmä coat of arms is super cool and the old kauvava coat of arms. Kauhava is still better than alahärmä
