Researchers from Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine have found a way to form the necessary blood vessels and capillaries that are needed to grow living, transplantable tissues in the laboratory. The researchers mixed two types of cells that are needed for blood vessel formation in a material that mimics the "extracellular matrix" in living tissues. This time-lapse image shows how two types of cells — which were tagged with fluorescent dye -- organize themselves into a functioning capillary networks within 72 hours.
