I think because of Hansel and Gretal, in the fairy tale a witch tries to eat them so I guess maybe that's the connection?

Fun fact: A Canadian viewer complained about Bugs' ending line ("Yeah, I know. But aren't they all witches inside?") being misogynistic. The line was temporarily replaced with "Yeah, I know. But who wants to be alone on Halloween?" (from the Bugs Bunny Howl-o-Ween special that airedon TV in the 1970s in America) until Canada's version of the FCC ruled that the original line could be construed as misogynistic, but it's otherwise harmless (wish America's censorship was like that). The UK TV version does cut the line down to "Yeah I know" and ends the cartoon there, because, despite being dated, their censorship board (BBFC) still think it's wrong because Bugs Bunny appeals to children and they have rules about allegedly good protagonists or characters children can identify with doing things considered dangerous, anti-social, or discriminatory. Meanwhile, America just left this uncut because they only care about women and minorities when it's nece$$ary.

Maybe an inside joke between the writers, debating the proper pronunciation of Hansel?

The Hansel reference...thinking about it...Hansel and Grettal...the 2 kids who went Mano a Mano with a witch in the woods...the witch who lured them with a house made of candy and tried to Cook them in an oven, as I recall.

People keep saying "HAWN-sel" and it sounds so odd to a world who's always said "HAAN-sel". That's my guess. Maybe it's a nothing gag thrown in for estranged laughs.

I love Witch Hazel! This short is great, from Bugs' reaction to being poisoned to the handsome prince coming in to save Bugs and then leaving, bewildered by Hansel's name. Also, I think the joke here is how Hansel's name is pronounced in this short. We usually pronounce it with a long '"a" sound. Here, it keeps being pronounced with a short "a" sound, making it sound rather strange to those who usually pronounce it the former way.
